FESTUS -- Cape Central High's baseball team reached the .500 mark Friday with a 14-1 run-rule win over Festus in five innings.

Dusty Barrows had two hits including a grand slam and five RBIs.

Mark Fisher, Mike Sullivan and Josh McIntosh each had two hits apiece. Fisher had three RBIs, Sullivan had two and McIntosh had one.

Travis Klipfel posted the win for Central (9-9). He went the distance, allowing one earned run and six hits. He walked none and struck out four. The Tigers backed him up with error-free defense.

"It was a big win for us to reach the .500 mark," Central coach Steve Williams said. "Travis pitched a good game and we played outstanding defense and that's what we have to do to win."

Central jumped on top with nine runs in the first inning. The Tigers added five more in the third.

Central's junior varsity team (8-5) suffered an 11-6 loss. Jeff Daniels suffered the loss.

SOFTBALL

Advance 11, Malden 3

MALDEN -- Emily Johnson went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and five RBIs as Advance improved to 7-0.

Ashley Hitt was the winning pitcher, going all seven inning and allowing five hits and three walks, while striking out six.

Jennifer Phelps went 3-for-4 for Advance.

GOLF

Jackson 167, Malden 188

MALDEN -- Nathan Brown shot 4-over-par 40 at Malden Municipal Golf Course to lead Jackson to an easy win.

Peyton Sims followed with a 41 for Jackson, which improved to 10-3 on the season. Gabe Estes shot a 42 and Brett McDowell shot a 43.

SWIMMING

Cape Central at Parkway South Invitational preliminaries

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central's Mary Beth Owen and Grace Freeman each finished first in their preliminaries Friday in the Parkway South Invitational.

Owen took the first seed in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.73) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.96).

Freeman, meanwhile, had the fastest time in the 50 freestyle (:25.47) and the 100 freestyle (:55.69)

Central's 200- and 400-freestyle relay teams also had the fastest times in the preliminaries. The 200 team finished the race in 1:44.63 and the 400 team swam a 3:48.29.

Other Cape Central swimmers who will compete in the finals today are Jennifer Freeze (200, 500 freestyle), Jean Maguire (500 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Kelley Green (breast stroke).
