CHARLESTON BOYS CLAIM KELLY MEET

BENTON -- With Charleston's boys leading the way, 12 new meet records were established Saturday at the 8th annual Hawk Invitational track and field meet hosted by Kelly High School.

Eleven of the records were broken on the boys' side. Charleston athletes accounted for four of the new marks as the Blue Jays finished with a first-place total of 118 points.

Park Hills placed second in the 14-team boys field with 95, followed by Ste. Genevieve Valle 86.5 and Kelly 86. Chaffee finished eighth with 36, Oran 12th with 19 and Scott City 13th with 11.

Ste. Genevieve Valle won the 12-team girls' meet easily with 144 points. Grandview was a distant second at 86, just barely edging out Kelly which had 85. Charleston placed sixth with 54 and Chaffee was ninth with 28.

"We had a good group of times and a good group of kids, which is attested to by all the records," said Kelly coach Bill Davis. "It was a good meet and we were really pleased with how it went."

Charleston's Adrian Rodgers led the record assault with victories in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Rodgers clocked 22.3 seconds in the 200 and 51.4 in the 400. Charleston also set meet records in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Overall, Charleston finished first in seven of the 18 events. The Bluejays' Jeff Ewing equaled the meet record in capturing the 100 (10.9), while Jason Ward won both the 110 high hurdles (16.0) and 300 intermediate hurdles (42.8).

Kelly's Nathen King won the 800 in 2:03.5 and anchored the victorious 4x800 team (8:25), which also consisted of Jobi Berry, Lucas Choate and C.O. Scheffer.

Also of local note, Andy Obermann of Chaffee tossed the shot put 46 feet and 1 inch to edge runnerup James Brainer of Kelly (43-1).

On the girls' side, Valle won five events and Grandview and Kelly each won three.

Kelly's Tabitha Shankle won the 800 in 2:36.6 while Jenny Riley captured the 1600 in 5:57.4. Both runners were on the victorious 4x800 squad (11:09) that also included Melissa Garner and April Cousins.

Oakville Invitational

ST. LOUIS -- Competing against more than 50 teams -- most of them Class 4A squads -- in one of the St. Louis area's top meets of the season, 3A Perryville brought home four fourth-place finishes.

On the girls side, the Lady Pirates' 4x800 relay team of Jen Brotherton, Katie Kutz, Jen Hadler and Renee Schlichting clocked a season-best time of 10:17.

Perryville's boys had three fourth-place finishes. The 4x800 relay team of Nathan Davis, Nathan Moore, James Boice and Jared Tanz clocked 8:14; the 4x400 relay squad of Matt Jenkins, Nathan Russler, Shawn Statler and Tanz clocked a season-best 3:32.11; and Davis timed 4:34 in the 1,600.

Notre Dame splits

POPLAR BLUFF -- Notre Dame split a pair of games, losing to Poplar Bluff 1-0 and beating Springfield Parkview 2-0.

In the victory, Jill Edwards scored both goals while Jessica Lawrance and Courtney Vickery each had assists as the Lady Bulldogs moved to 7-7-1.

"We struggled some with Poplar Bluff but we played much better against Springfield Parkview, which beat Poplar Bluff earlier in the day," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley.

Jackson 1, Francis Howell Central

ST. CHARLES -- Julie Wunderlich scored a second-half goal to lift Jackson, which improved to 11-4-1.

"It was a pretty even game," said Jackson coach Bonnie Knowlan. "We just happened to get the goal."

Jackson's JV prevailed 2-0 as Lacy Hodo and Lindsay Dumey scored.

Perryville 3, Carbondale (Ill.) 0

PERRYVILLE -- The Lady Pirates improved to 10-2-1 with a shutout victory over Carbondale.

Stacey Baer staked Perryville to a 1-0 halftime lead off a pass from Britney Weibrecht. In the second half Brooke Winkler also scored off a Weibrecht feed and Amanda Schumer tallied off a Baer assist.

Notre Dame, Jackson win

2 of 3 in Potosi tourney

POTOSI -- Notre Dame's pitching allowed just one earned run over a three-game span, but the Bulldogs lost their second game of the year in a round-robin tournament hosted by Potosi.

The Bulldogs (13-2) lost to Potosi -- ranked No. 1 in Class 3A -- 1-0 in nine innings. Mark Ostendorf allowed just six hits and a walk in going the distance.

Scott Reinagel had two of Notre Dame's three hits.

Josh Eftink nearly equaled Ostendorf's performance by holding Pacific to five hits and two walks in a 6-1 victory. Eftink pitched seven innings, allowing no earned runs, while striking out six and walking two.

Notre Dame knocked off Jackson 11-0 late Friday night thanks to a two-hitter by Brian Obermann.

Jackson bounced back with a victory Saturday to also finish the tournament at 2-1. The Indians, who had beaten Pacific 7-6 on Friday, defeated Potosi 5-3 Saturday.

Josh Hopkins picked up the win against Potosi, allowing eight hits in going the distance. He struck out three and walked two.

Jackson (6-8), led by Andy Callis' 3-for-3 performance, banged out 12 hits. Chris Kohm, Toby Freeman and Chris Schlick all went 2-for-4 with Schlick picking up two RBIs.

With the score tied 1-1, Jackson pushed across three runs in the second. Potosi scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to close the gap to 4-3, but Jackson scored an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth.

SWIMMING

Central places sixth

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central's Grace Freeman and Mary Beth Owen each went undefeated in their events as the Lady Tigers took sixth out of nine teams in the Parkway South Invitational.

Freeman took first in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Owen took first in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
