Jackson's volleyball team defended its championship in the SEMO Conference Tournament by defeating Sikeston 15-6, 15-6 Wednesday night at Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Earlier Wednesday, Jackson knocked off New Madrid County Central 15-6, 15-5, relegating New Madrid to third place.

Also Wednesday, Cape Central lost twice, falling to Sikeston 15-1, 15-12 and New Madrid 15-10, 15-8.

Jackson improved its record to 5-0 and coach Nancy Ellis was extremely excited about her team's play.

"The girls played very well tonight," she said. "I was very pleased."

In the title match against Sikeston, Andrea Koeper had 10 kills, three blocks, and three service aces. Jennifer Mesey added seven kills while Jenna Leet followed with three. Casey Randol had eight assists and Erin Hartman added five.

Against New Madrid, Koeper again led the way in kills with eight. Mesey had four kills, three aces and three blocks while Randol dished out 12 assists and Hartman had eight.

For Cape Central in its two matches, Amber Birk had nine kills while Katie Cozby added six kills. Coach Debra Spinner credited Sarah Pfanstiel for strong all-around play.

Ste. Genevieve 7-15-15

Notre Dame 15-4-8

Notre Dame opened its home season with a hard-fought loss to Ste. Genevieve.

"It was a very good match," said Notre Dame coach Helen Payne, whose team fell to 2-3. "Ste. Genevieve has a good team."

Carrie Halter served 18 points for the Lady Bulldogs, including eight straight in the first game. Jill Edwards added seven service points.

Lynne Obermiller led the way in kills with seven while Michelle Hency had three. Katie Canfield had eight assists while Rachel Beussink contributed three kills and five blocks.

Notre Dame's JV prevailed in three games.

Woodland 15-15

Oran 2-7

ORAN -- Woodland remained undefeated at 4-0 by easing past Oran.

Lilo Whitener had seven kills while Sarah Booth contributed five kills and Jessica Bollinger had four digs. Julia Cutsinger led the way in assists with 10 and Danyel Farrell added nine.

Oran's JV prevailed 13-15, 15-12, 15-4.

SOFTBALL

Cape Central 11, Poplar Bluff 1

POPLAR BLUFF -- Casi Gross just missed a shutout as the Lady Tigers improved to 7-6.

Gross pitched a three-hitter and allowed Poplar Bluff its only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Central had 14 hits, led by a 4-for-4 performance from Trisha Klipfel, who also drove in three runs. Eve Lungwitz had three hits while Crissi Matthews and Amber Voerg added two hits apiece. Voerg homered and had four RBIs.

The Lady Tigers went ahead for good with six runs in the third inning. They added three in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Central also romped in the JV game 18-0 in five innings behind the pitching of Holly Schnurbusch.

The Lady Tigers play at Cape Girardeau rival Notre Dame today.

Ste. Genevieve 4, Notre Dame 2

Notre Dame fell to 5-5 by losing a close game to Ste. Genevieve.

Ramona Blankenship allowed 10 hits while hurling all seven innings. She fanned three and walked one.

Blankenship and Sarah Berkbigler each had two of Notre Dame's five hits.

The Lady Bulldogs' JV rolled 18-1 behind the pitching of Amy Young.

Notre Dame entertains Cape Central today.

Jackson 5, Goreville 4

JACKSON -- Jackson built an early 5-0 lead and held on for the victory, its fifth straight.

The Lady Indians (6-4) scored twice in the first inning and three times in the third before Goreville rallied.

Gretchen King pitched six innings for the win. She allowed six hits and one earned run. Beth Becker recorded a save by hurling a perfect seventh.

Jackson had eight hits, two from Megan Kuntze, who homered, doubled and scored twice. Cherish Tillman added a two-run triple.

The Lady Indians' JV breezed 10-0 behind the pitching of Heather Tuschoff.

Perryville 16, St. Vincent 1

PERRYVILLE -- Perryville treated its city rival rudely by romping in a run-rule game.

Megan Narrow pitched a four-inning no-hitter. She fanned two and walked two.

The Lady Pirates (2-4) had 15 hits, led by Rachel Verseman, Amanda Schumer, Brittany Weibrecht and Stacy Baer with three each. Baer homered, Schumer doubled twice and tripled, and Weibrecht doubled and tripled. Amanda Nuyt added two hits.

Perryville's JV rolled by an identical 16-1 score behind the hurling of Sara Lappe.

The Lady Pirates host Windsor today.

GIRLS TENNIS

Cape Central 7, Charleston 2

The Lady Tigers improved to 2-0 in dual matches by winning four of six singles contests and sweeping the doubles.

Central's JV won 14 of 16 matches played.

The Lady Tigers host Carbondale, Ill., today.

Cape Central romps

PERRYVILLE -- Central won its season opener by defeating St. Vincent 40-0.

Monroe Hicks scored two touchdowns and rushed for more than 150 yards to pace the Cubs. Jeremiah Dukes also scored two touchdowns, one on a 90-yard pass from Chris Daniels.

Daniels and Jay Ruark also scored TDs for the Cubs.
