Southeast Missouri State University's power-hitting outfielder Charlie Marino, the school's single-season record holder for home runs, may miss the remainder of the season with a torn cartilage in his right knee.

Marino injured the knee in a game last week against Ole Miss. He was attempting to beat out an infield hit and suffered the injury when he jammed his leg at first base. The injury may require surgery and might force him to miss the rest of the season.

"This is an unfortunate injury for Charlie," said Southeast coach Mark Hogan. "He has been a major factor in our success and he will be missed."

Marino, a senior, is eligible to receive a medical red-shirt from the NCAA if it is determined he would miss the remainder of the season.

The Indians were counting heavily on Marino's bat this season. He transferred to Southeast after playing two years at Rancho Santiago C.C. in California. His junior season with the Indians was impressive with a school-record 21 home runs, 13 doubles, 51 RBIs, a .333 batting average and 16 stolen bases.

Southeast will be in action today at Capaha Park when Southern Illinois-Edwardsville visits for a 3 p.m. game.
