SE SIGNS NEW HAVEN'S SHEER

Three-time Missouri all-state basketball blayer Tim Scheer of New Haven High School has signed a national letter of intent to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

Scheer, a 6-foot-6 forward, led New Haven to the Missouri Class 1A state championship in 1997 and 1999 and to a third-place finish in 1998. He scored a school-record 2,024 points during his career.

One of 10 finalists for the "Mr. Show-Me" basketball award, Scheer also holds the single-game scoring record at New Haven. He scored 45 points in the state championship game against Bishop Hogan High School of Kansas City in 1997.

Last season, Scheer averaged 23.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. He shot 53 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the foul line.

"Tim has a great future at Southeast Missouri State," said New Haven coach Ray Steinhoff. "He is a very talented and versatile player and a fine young man. Tim loves to win and has helped lift our program to championship caliber over the past three years. I'm confident that he can help Southeast do the same."

Scheer joins a Southeast recruiting class that includes 7-2 center Kostas Avgerinos of Athens, Greece and two early signees, 6-5 all-state guard Mike Sutherland of Lutheran North High in St. Louis and 6-8 junior college forward Jamel Richardson who averaged 18 points per game this season at Florissant Valley Community College.

Southeast expects to sign three more players.
