JACKSON -- Paul Johns was perfect at the plate and went the distance on the mound Wednesday as Jackson came away with a 5-3 home win over Fredericktown.

Fredericktown led 3-1 after three innings, but the Indians rallied with three runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth to improve to 4-3.

Johns had three of Jackson's 11 hits and allowed only two earned runs and seven hits to the Black Cats. Jackson teammates Justin Gladish and Tory Meyr both added two hits.

Jackson goes to New Madrid on Friday.

Chaffee 12, Delta 0

CHAFFEE -- The Red Devils broke out of a hitting slump Wednesday, with 11 hits in a five-inning victory over visiting Delta.

Chaffee (1-3) scored three runs in the first inning and seven in the second to bust the game open. Denny Graviett ripped a three-run home run in the Red Devils' second inning and added an RBI double. Jason Harrell and Dusty Leggett both added two hits for Chaffee, which entered the game with just four hits in its previous three games.

"We had a long talk Tuesday and came out and played with a lot more confidence," said Chaffee coach Bruce Qualls. "We got a double in first inning and it took off from there."

Tommy Stidham pitched all five innings for the win, striking out 10 and allowing only one hit and two walks.

Chaffee plays at Scott County Central today.

Poplar Bluff 9, Oran 8

POPLAR BLUFF -- Oran dropped its first game of the season Wednesday, committing four costly errors in a loss to the host Mules.

The Eagles out-hit Bluff 9-7 and led 4-0 until the fourth inning when the Mules scored seven unearned runs. Oran (5-1) tied the game 7-7 with three runs in the fifth, but the Mules went back ahead and never trailed.

Jeremy Pobst, Dustin Dannemueller and Jeff Schaefer all had two hits for Oran. Dustin Glastetter took the loss.

Leopold comes to Oran on Tuesday.

St. Vincent 8, Arcadia Valley 4

PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent improved to 5-2 Wednesday with a victory at home.

Pat Brown totaled three of the Indians nine hits, with teammates Dusty Wengert and Bryan Meyer adding two hits each. Justin Amschler added a two-run bases-loaded sacrifice bunt on a bunt-and-run play. Wengert relieved Amschler in the fourth inning for the win.

The Indians play at Festus today.

SOFTBALL

Kelly 4, Notre Dame 3

Kelly remained undefeated during the spring season Tuesday as the Lady Hawks rallied for a dramatic victory over host Notre Dame.

Natalie Robert's two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning pushed the Lady Hawks ahead 4-3 and they then held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 5-0.

Brittney Lambert scattered eight hits to pick up the victory. Losing hurler Jill Huber also allowed eight hits.

Notre Dame (1-3) had taken a 3-2 lead in the sixth on Randi Senciboy's solo homer. Huber, Bonnie Essner and Suzanne Schwartz all had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs.

"It was just a good game," said Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim. "Both teams played well."

Kelly will host Charleston today.

Chaffee 11, Delta 1

CHAFFEE -- Chaffee stayed undefeated at 4-0 with a five-inning, run-rule victory at home Tuesday.

Amy Burnett raised her pitching record to 3-0 as she allowed two hits.

The Lady Red Devils had 11 hits, two each from Brandi Foulk, Jill Little and Jennifer Siebert. Little homered and had two RBIs while Siebert had two triples, four RBIs and three stolen bases.

Chaffee scored five runs in the second inning and then ended the game with six in the fifth.

"Delta is a much improved team," said Chaffee coach Mark Devenport. "We had the two big innings, but we had to work hard."

Chaffee visits Scott County Central today.

GOLF

Cape Central 167, Jackson 172

Cape Central improved to 5-1 Wednesday with a five-stroke win over Jackson at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Dane McClaird and Mike Oslund tied for medalist honors, shooting 40's over nine holes on the par 35 course. Bryan Welker shot a 43 followed by 44's from Jeff Haycraft Danny Groesbeck.

Jackson's top four golfers -- Gabe Estes, Craig Hutson, Brett McDowell and Spencer Knowlan -- all carded 43's

Both teams play Monday in the 18-hole Poplar Bluff Invitational.
