As Jackson High's Nathan Windeknecht recorded another hat trick, the home teams had their way Thursday in first-round games in the Notre Dame Soccerfest.

Cape Central outlasted Poplar Bluff 4-3 in overtime. Notre Dame dominated Hillsboro 8-0, and Jackson controlled Sikeston 7-0.

Poplar Bluff tied the Central game 3-3 with a minute to go after goals by the Tigers' Jon Mark Thompson, Robbie Winschel and Brett McNabb. Brad Bollwerk and Justin Shelby had assists during regulation.

Two minutes into sudden death, Winschel ended the match on an assist from Thompson. Central improved to 1-1.

In Notre Dame's match, Oliver Sanders, Tommy Wencewicz and Zach Miller each had two goals and Adam Obermiller and Wesley Steele each added one.

Sanders had two assists and Wencewicz, Obermiller and Chris Dirnberger each had one as the Bulldogs moved to 3-0.

And in Jackson's game, Windeknecht, who scored three goals in the Indians' season opener Tuesday against Central, added another three scores against Sikeston, giving him six in two games this season. Windeknecht scored 20 goals last season as a junior, a team record.

Greg Schwab, Noah Reese, Joey Webber and Michael Schuette each added a goal. Jackson improved to 2-0.

Results from the other first-round game between Carbondale and Farmington were not available. Central will play the winner of that match today at 3:30, and Notre Dame will meet Jackson at 5 at the old Notre Dame High School.

Volleyball

Notre Dame 15-15, St. Vincent 9-9

In the first match in Notre Dame's new gymnasium, the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) swept St. Vincent Thursday.

Notre Dame's Erin Vickery, Bonnie Essner and Rachael Beussink each had six kills. Sara Westrich recorded 14 assists.

For St. Vincent (0-2), Jessica Lakenan had nine kills, Casey Kirn had 12 assists and Stephanie Schremp totaled 11 digs.

Notre Dame's JV team won 15-6, 16-14, and St. Vincent's freshman team won 17-15.

Jackson 15-15, Caruthersville 2-8

JACKSON -- Jackson improved to 2-0 with its easy win over visiting Caruthersville Thursday.

Jackson's Andrea Koepper had six kills and four blocks, Diane Mirley tallied four service aces and Sara Nothdurft added five kills.

Jackson's JV team won 15-3, 15-2.

Ste. Genevieve 15-15, Perryville 4-4

STE. GENEVIEVE -- Perryville dropped its season opener Thursday.

Perryville's Jeni Blevins and Jamie Amberger each had four digs and Shannon Dreyer added two assists.

Ste. Genevieve's JV team won 15-12, 15-11.

Meadow Heights Tournament

Fifth-seeded Woodland pulled off the upset of the Meadow Heights Tournament Thursday, upending top-seeded Leopold in three sets.

Woodland entered today's 8 p.m. final with a 15-5, 1-15, 15-8 victory over Leopold, the defending Missouri 1A state champion. Woodland will face second-seeded Bell City, a 15-4, 15-12 winner over third-seeded Meadow Heights in Thursday's other championship semifinal.

In consolation semifinal play, fourth-seeded Zalma defeated eight-seeded Greenville 15-1, 15-4.

Leopold and Meadow Heights will meet at 7 p.m. today in the third-place game while Zalma will meet Advance at 6 p.m. in the consolation final.

Softball

Cape Central 6, Kelly 2

Although Kelly outhit Central 8-4, walks and errors hurt the Lady Hawks as Central won Thursday.

Cassie Koch led Central with two doubles and three RBIs. Kathy Michel got the win. She allowed struck out one and walked one in seven innings.

Megan Beggs went 3-for-4 for Kelly and Audrey Burford was 2-for-3.

Jackson 8, Poplar Bluff 2

JACKSON -- Jackson won its third conference game of the week, defeating Poplar Bluff at home.

Beth Becker allowed just three hits and struck out six for the Lady Indians, who improved to 6-3 on the season.

Jackson rapped out 11 hits, including two apiece by Emily Sander, Megan Kuntze, Amanda Bollinger and Jessica Sander. Kuntze and Stacie Illers each had a double and Bollinger knocked in two runs.

"We're getting hits, getting on base, and taking advantage of our speed and making things happen," said Jackson coach Becky Riney.

Notre Dame 14, St. Vincent 1

Notre Dame pitcher Jill Huber limited St. Vincent to one hit in four innings as the Lady Bulldogs dominated Thursday's game, which was halted in the fifth inning.

Huber struck out four and walked none. Mika Williamson came on in the fifth.

Notre Dame (2-3) had 10 hits. Ashley Koettker went 2-for-2 and Randi Senciboy was 2-for-4.

Hillsboro 5, Perryville 4

HILLSBORO -- Perryville suffered its first loss of the season Thursday against Hillsboro. With the Lady Pirates leading 3-2 after three innings, Hillsboro scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Carrie Preston took the loss. She allowed 11 hits and two earned runs in six innings.

Perryville (2-1) totaled 12 hits. Stacey Baer had three hits and Julie Preston, Amber Regelsperger and Amber Oakes each added two.

Girls tennis

Charleston 9, Chaffee 0

CHARLESTON -- Charleston swept visiting Chaffee Thursday. The Lady Red Devils dropped to 0-3.

Charleston won the lone JV match.
