BENTON -- St. Mary's of Paducah, Ky., won both the boys and girls races in the Kelly Cross Country Invitational Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's girls, who placed second in the Kentucky state meet last season, won with 29 points. Perryville (37) was second, Poplar Bluff (75) third, Kelly (94) fourth and Van Buren (112) fifth.

St. Mary's boys finished with 41 points. Perryville had 43, Kelly 59, Poplar Bluff 93, Advance 124 and Notre Dame 129.

Notre Dame's Susan Judd placed fourth. Perryville's Jen Hadler, Renee Schlichting, Andrea Weibrecht and Jill Berkbuegler took fifth, sixth, seventh and 10th, respectively.

Perryville's Nathan Davis placed second and Nathan Moore was third. Jarod Tanz took fifth and James Boice came in ninth. Kelly's Lucas Choate placed fourth and Nathen King 10th. Advance's Ross McFerron took eighth.

Northwest Invitational

ST. LOUIS -- Jackson's girls finished third and Cape Central's were right behind in fourth Saturday afternoon in high school cross country action.

Lafayette won with 65 points. Parkway South had 92, Jackson 104 and Central 143.

Central's Myka Bohnsack placed fifth, and Jackson's Amanda Beussink crossed the line in 10th.

Marquette (61), Parkway South (61), Eureka (77) and Northwest (86) were the top boys finishers. Central (130) placed fifth and Jackson (350) came in 11th.

Central's Jonathan Anderson placed fourth.

Francis Howell N. Tournament

ST. LOUIS -- After losing 2-1 to host Francis Howell North, Cape Central defeated Washington 2-1. The Tigers are now 2-6.

In the first match, Howell North scored two minutes before the half on a corner kick and then 17 minutes into the second half, making the score 2-0. Central's Nathan Gibbar scored with three minutes to go.

Central trailed 1-0 in the other match before Justin McMullen scored on an assist from Brett McNabb 28 minutes in. The game winner, from Jon Mark Thompson on an assist from Chris Cole, came with 17 minutes remaining.

Softball

Central JV wins tourney

Cape Central's JV squad scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Seckman 5-4 in the championship game of the eight-team Jackson JV Tournament.

With the help of a Sarah Muench home run, Central took a 4-0 lead into the seventh, only to see Seckman tie the score. In the bottom of the seventh, Central's Ashley Foutch singled and later scored all the way from second on a wild pitch.

Casi Childers notched the win in relief of Cassie Gross.

Central advanced to the finals with a 15-0 victory over East Carter Co. and a 15-1 win over Jackson.
