ST. LOUIS -- Cape Girardeau Central High's girls cross country team placed fourth in the 21-team field in the large-schools division of the Hancock Invitational Saturday.

West Plains won the event with 36 points. Central had 146, and Jackson, which finished sixth, totaled 184.

Central's boys placed fifth among 25 teams. West Plains won with 89 points, and the Tigers totaled 270. Jackson did not field a team.

In the small-schools division, Kelly's boys placed eighth among 25 teams and Kelly's girls took 16th.

Central's Myka Bohnsack placed 14th in 20:46 on the 3.1-mile course at Jefferson Barracks State Park. Brittany Ballard was 19th (21:14), Kim Pancoast 20th (21:15), Leanne Lee 35th (21:59) and Elizabeth Meyr 71st (23:31). The top 40 finishers medaled.

Jackson's Amanda Beussink finished 22nd (21:22). Julie Wunderlich was 24th (21:25), Sarah Stiegemeyer 29th (21:34), Sarah Strack 51st (22:37) and Christy Thoma 70th (23:30).

For Central's boys, Jonathan Anderson led the way with a 13th-place finish in 17:32. Following him were Mark Stone (36th, 17:55), Gabe Austin (70th, 18:56), Justin Hawkins (77th, 19:08) and Ross Tighlman (90th, 19:42).

Jackson's girls placed sixth in the JV race. Jodi Brunke (19th, 23:48) and Becky Winkler (22nd, 23:56) both medaled, as did Central's Lainie Bohnsack (20th, 23:53). In the freshman-sophomore race, Jackson's Zach Friedrich placed 26th in 19:26.

Kelly's Nathen King placed 20th in the varsity small-schools race in 18:05. Lucas Choate (39th, 18:25), Daniel Mothershead (53rd, 18:58), Jamie Essner (107th, 20:06) and C.O. Scheffer (129th, 20:33) followed.

For the Lady Hawks, Melissa Garner placed 66th (23:38), Megan Nelson 91st (24:10), April Cousins 94th (24:15), Jenny Riley 99th (24:22) and Laura Ruff 135th (25:23).

Softball

Central wins two

Cape Central beat Kelly 10-7 in eight innings Saturday. The Lady Tigers then topped Vienna, Ill., 5-3.

Central's Amber Voerg had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs Saturday. Erica McDonald had three hits in the two games.

Kathy Michel got the win against Kelly. She permitted two earned runs on six hits. Casi Childers won the second game, allowing eight hits.

The Lady Tigers are now 18-4.

Central's JV team beat Kelly 6-5 and lost to Vienna 9-8.

Boys soccer

Jeff City tournament

JEFFERSON CITY -- Cape Central (4-7-2) tied Springfield-Glendale 2-2 Saturday morning in a game that was rained out Friday in the Jefferson City Tournament. That rescheduled game forced the Tigers to play back-to-back matches, and Kansas City-Park Hill beat the Tigers 4-0.

Central's Nathan Gibbar scored on a free kick against Glendale. Down 2-1 in the second half, the Tigers' Jon Mark Thompson scored on a headed ball after a Gibbar free kick.

Notre Dame 6, Paducah Tighlman 1

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Leading 1-0 at halftime, Notre Dame tacked on five goals in the second half and pulled away from Paducah Tighlman Saturday.

Zach Miller and Adam Obermiller each scored two goals and Oliver Sanders and Matt Bollinger each added one for Notre Dame (10-1-1).

Sanders had two assists and Nathan Essner, Wesley Steele, Miller and Obermiller each had one.

Notre Dame's JV team won 3-0. Nathan LeGrand scored two goals and Timmy Wencewicz added one.
