SOUTHEAST TRACK TEAMS HOSTING MURRAY STATE

Southeast Missouri State University's men's and women's indoor track teams will host Murray State Friday in a pair of dual meets at the Student Recreation Center.

The meets will begin with field events at 5:30 p.m., with the first running events scheduled for 7 p.m.

"Our goal will be simply to beat Murray State," said Southeast coach Joey Haines. "We are going to hold out four of our top women's performers so they can compete in a meet at Missouri on Saturday, but we should still have enough depth to beat Murray State.

"Our men's team should be favored, but Murray State will dominate the distances and could make it interesting."

The Southeast women's mile relay team that won at Southern Illinois last week will compete at Missouri on Saturday. The squad of Yvonne Hente, Tammy Wenkel, Kim Stewart and Heather Keltner will try for a win against several Big 12 teams in the Missouri Invitational.

Hente, who won the 200 and 400 last week at SIU, will also be in the 400 at Missouri while Wenkel, who won the 800 at SIU, will be entered in the 800. Keltner will run the 600 and Stewart will be in the 200.

Southeast's women, who finished third at the 11-team SIU meet, should fare well in field events, sprints and middle-distance races against Murray State.

Heather Denihan, the long jump winner at SIU, will be favored in the long jump and will also enter the high jump and triple jump. Shot putters Jennifer Phillips and Lutricia Purham will be favored to finish 1-2 in the shot.

Shauna Birge and Natalie Talley will be favored in the sprints while Candice Parker, Estelle McHargue and Janelle Quigley should do well in mid-distance events.

The Southeast men, fourth at SIU last week, should dominate field events and sprints. Jon Riley, third at SIU in the long jump, will be favored Friday night in the long jump and he'll also be in the triple jump.

Brian Alfultis will be favored in the shot put while pole vaulters Chris Moore, Jim Fox and Jaret Willi should score a lot of points.

Scott Tate will be a favorite in the hurdles while DeWayne Johnson, Derrick Brown and Ryan Steck will provide strong entries in the sprints and Brock Alspaugh and Neil Birchler will be favored in mid-distance events.
