COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Southeast Missouri State University's baseball team, after dropping the opener in part because of a controversial call, came back to claim a split here Saturday.

Tennessee Tech prevailed 2-1 in the first game but Southeast erased an early deficit and rolled 13-6 in the nightcap.

The Indians are now 9-8 overall and 3-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The first-place Golden Eagles are also 9-8 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Jason Swearingen (3-1) was the tough-loser first-game loser. He allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out two and issuing no walks.

After Tech's Bobby Morgan hit a home run in the first inning, Southeast's Darin Kinsolving belted his fourth homer of the season in the fourth to force a 1-1 tie.

Then in the bottom of the fourth, Tech had runners on first and third with two outs. A ground ball to short was bobbled by Southeast shortstop Steve Lowe, but Lowe appeared to tag the runner who slid into Lowe at second. However, the runner was ruled safe, with Lowe being charged with an error as the go-ahead run scored.

"Any time there is a play like that that ends up resulting in a run in a 2-1 game, it's tough," said Southeast coach Mark Hogan. "The umpire said he (Lowe) never dropped the ball. If that's the case, then we have an out. But the umpire said Steve never tagged him, which is hard to believe because there was so much contact."

Enough contact, in fact, that Lowe was injured and had to leave the game. He did not play in the nightcap and is doubtful for today's final game of the series.

But despite the tough loss, the Indians rebounded in the nightcap despite falling behind 3-0 in the first.

Trailing 3-2, the Indians exploded for seven runs in the fifth to break the game open.

Ryan Spille (4-0) got the win despite being hit harder than he has all season. Spille went the distance, allowing nine hits. He fanned five and walked four.

After getting just five hits in the opener, Southeast had 15 hits in the nightcap.

Kyle Yount had four hits in the second game and five on the day as he stretched his winning streak to 12 games and increased his batting average to .454.

Jeremy Johnson also had five hits on the day while Kinsolving drove in five runs. Marty Lane added three RBIs.
