JACKSON BOYS JUMP ON HILLSBORO EARLY, BEAT HAWKS 75-58

JACKSON -- Jackson High's boys basketball team pounced on Hillsboro in the first half, building a 26-point lead, and defeated the visiting Eagles 75-58 Tuesday night.

Jeff Walter scored 19 points and Justin Keen added 18 as Jackson improved to 9-4 on the season.

The Indians held a 24-12 lead by the close of the first quarter and upped the advantage to 46-20 by halftime.

"That was probably the best half we played this year," said Jackson coach Steve Burk. "We did a good job defensively and moved the ball around and did a good job offensively."

Ryan Good, 24 points, was the only Hillsboro player in double figures.

Scott Co. Central 83

MORLEY -- Scott City's Rams bounced back from their only loss of the season -- to Cape Central in the finals of the University High Christmas Tournament -- by pounding host Scott County Central Tuesday night.

The Rams (11-1), who improved to 3-0 in the Scott-Mississippi Conference, got 34 points from Dustin Cauble. Tim Lowery had 23 points and 14 assists while Chris Sisk scored 16 points and Howie Stubenrauch and Jon Beck both added 10.

Scott Central got 26 points from Eric Canady. Also in double figures were Corey Gipson with 15, Demetrish Williams with 13 and Marcus Blissett with 10.

"We didn't play very good defense, but we shot the ball well," said Scott City coach Derek McCord.

Scott City's JV improved to 7-1 with a 77-56 win.

Perryville 81, Grandview 42

HILLSBORO -- Perryville, which broke into the state's Class 3A rankings this week, collected its seventh straight victory and improved to 1-0 in Jefferson County Conference action with a comfortable victory over host Grandview Tuesday night.

Scott Kassel scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Perryville improved to 11-1 on the season. Bruce Weinkein added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Meyer added 12 points.

The Pirates jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter and led 45-22 at halftime.

"I've been pleased with our shooting," said Perryville coach Rick Francis. "In four of our last five games we shot over 50 percent."

Perryville pulled down 20 offensive rebound and only committed nine turnovers.

Kelly 74, Sikeston 60

BENTON -- Sophomore Jim Hulshof scored a career-high 28 points as Kelly recorded a rare win over visiting Sikeston Tuesday night.

"I've been here for three years and we've never beat them on any level -- freshman, JV or varsity," said Kelly coach Kent Mangels. "It's a good win for us."

Kelly got out of the blocks quickly, building a 21-8 lead by the close of the first quarter. The Hawks led 38-23 at halftime. Kelly took a comfortable 59-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Jason Glastetter added 19 points for Kelly, which improved to 6-5.

Henley Montgomery scored 23 points for Sikeston (3-8).

Marquand 84

Meadow Heights 36

MARQUAND -- Marquand continued its fine season by using a big second half to rout visiting Meadow Heights Tuesday night.

The Tigers (9-3) led just 35-26 at halftime but they outscored the Panthers 49-10 in the second half.

Dusty Stephens led the Tigers with 21 points. Brandon Settle had 19, Jeremy Reimler 16 and Travis Braswell 11.

Meadow Heights got 11 points from Brandon Boyd.

"We got outpositioned in the first half, but we played really good defense in the second half," said Marquand coach Ken Lunsford.

Bell City 66

Zalma 65

ZALMA -- Bell City needed a basket in the closing seconds to slip past host Zalma Tuesday night.

The Cubs (5-5) were led by Jay Gadberry with 13 points, Nate Wills with 12, Matt Knoderer with 10 and Jacob Jenkins with 10.

Zalma (0-7) got a game-high 31 points from Terry Hendrix, who recently became eligible. Adam Wallace added 13.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Delta Tournament

DELTA -- Delta and Portageville advanced to tonight's finals with narrow semifinal victories Tuesday night.

Delta edged Dexter 37-33 as Jody Below scored 18 points while Portageville slipped past Chaffee 32-29.

Also Tuesday, in consolation play, Becky Lorenz scored 20 points and Fara Galati had 14 as St. Vincent beat Puxico 59-42 and Nikki Anderson scored 21 points as Woodland downed Oran 52-37.

St. Vincent and Woodland will play at 5 today for the consolation title. Then it will be Chaffee vs. Dexter at 6:30 for third place and Delta vs. Portageville at 8 for the championship.

Cape Central 16

Central dropped to 1-3 in dual matches as visiting Farmington romped Tuesday night.

The Tigers got technical fall victories from Jonah Woods at 103 pounds and Dustin Gross at 160. Central also received six points for a double forfeit at heavyweight.

"Farmington has a good team, but I didn't think we wrestled as well as we could have," said Central coach Drew Lilledahl.

Central returns to action Thursday night by hosting Sikeston.
