TIGERS PIN LOSS ON MARION

MARION, Ill. -- Cape Central's wrestlers overcame four forfeits Thursday night to defeat Marion 36-33.

The Tigers (2-4-1) overcame the forfeits with four pins in the nine matches wrestled. Two forfeits also helped the Tiger cause.

"We overcame some adversity," said Cape Central coach Drew Lilledahl. "We made some pins where we had to have pins."

Getting pins for the Tigers were Keith Benton (112), Travis Kauffman (130), Troy Sikes (145) and Dustin Gross (171).

In a pivotal match at 140, Cape Central's Ben Keefe edged Marion's Ben Lawler 8-7.

Central will host Parkway South tonight.

Girls basketball

Cape Central 60, Kelly 35

BENTON -- Cape Central used a tight man-to-man defense to hold Kelly to 18 points through the first three quarters and posted a decisive victory.

Nicole Thiele paced Central's attack with 15 points while Laura Lukens, 12 points, and Elizabeth Kunz, 10, were also in double figures. Central upped its season mark to 14-2. Kelly fell to 10-6.

"Our man-to-man defense has been looking good lately," said Central coach Paula Watkins. "I'm really glad they're taking pride in their defense."

Central took a 12-4 lead into the second quarter, where it blew the game open with a 22-7 scoring advantage. The Lady Tigers led 34-11 at halftime.

"They have good guards and good inside people," said Kelly coach Clay VanGilder. "They're a good basketball team."

In JV action, Central won 46-12. Kim Aslinger netted nine points for Central.

Central visits Poplar Bluff on Saturday in a makeup game. The JV game starts at 3:30 p.m.

Scott City 91, Dexter 34

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City erased any comeback thoughts Dexter may have held with a 32-3 scoring edge in the third quarter.

Scott City (12-4) took a 34-22 lead into the second half.

"Our press really got to them in the third quarter," said Scott City coach Randy White.

The Lady Rams held a 64-25 lead by the end of the period.

Scott City's Sara Emerson led all scorers with 21 points. Tara Sanford tacked on 17 points.

Kim Bess tallied 14 points for Dexter.

Scott City returns to action Tuesday at Woodland in a makeup game.

Charleston 62, East Prairie 26

CHARLESTON -- Lawanna Wiley scored a game-high 20 points as Charleston cruised past East Prairie

Stacy Galmore added 16 points as the Lady Blue Jays improved to 8-9 on the season.

Charleston opened a 14-2 lead in the first quarter and held a comfortable 29-10 advantage by halftime.

Charleston visits Meridian (Ill.) on Saturday.

Delta 61, Chaffee 29

DELTA -- Paula Eftink netted 19 points as Delta charged past Chaffee Thursday.

Delta (9-3) also received 12 points from Jody Below.

Delta led 22-10 after one quarter and blanked Chaffee in the second period for a 34-10 halftime lead.

Delta returns to action Monday when Puxico visits.

Boys basketball

South Iron 84, Marquand 79

MARQUAND -- Marquand's Brandon Settle scored 23 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome South Iron Thursday.

For Marquand (12-4), Dusty Stephens added 13 points and Andy Barnes netted 12.

The second quarter proved the decisive period. The teams entered the quarter tied 18-18, but South Iron moved ahead 46-40 by halftime. Marquand held a 39-38 scoring edge in the second half, but couldn't account for the six-point deficit.

Marquand returns to action Monday in the Meadow Heights Tournament. Marquand, the top seed, plays No. 8 seed Zalma at 6 p.m.

Boys swimming

Fort Zumwalt 112, Cape Central 73

Cape Central closed it dual season Thursday with a home loss to Fort Zumwalt, but the Tigers managed to qualify for the state meet in two more events.

The medley relay team of Ben Roeger, Jason Marietta, Matt Younghouse and Eric Yount placed second in 1:47.93 to qualify for state.

Roeger also made his first individual state-qualifying time, placing third in the backstroke in 58.9.

"That's been our goal -- to get those two qualified," said Central coach Dayna Powell.

Central swimmers placed first in four events. Jason Owen won both the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM; Nick Sterrett won diving; and Younghouse captured the 200 freestyle.
