Tourney finals rained out

Without ever taking the field Sunday, Chaffee's Junior American Legion baseball team was declared the winner of the Cape Girardeau SEMO Bank Tournament.

Saturday night's heavy rains washed out the final day of the eight-team tourney. Chaffee, as the lone undefeated squad in the tournament, was awarded the championship.

Chaffee, 3-0 in tournament pool play, is 21-0 on the season.

Christian Brothers from Memphis, Tenn., -- which was scheduled to play Chaffee for the title at Central High Sunday -- finished second after going 2-1 in pool play.

Host Cape SEMO Bank and Imperial were scheduled to play for third place Sunday after going 2-1 in pool play. But Imperial was awarded third by virtue of the first tie-breaker of fewest runs allowed, with Cape finishing fourth.

Jackson wound up fifth in the tournament.
