Ron Woods, Cairo High's eternally optimistic football coach, says this just might be the season that the Pilots finally get over the hump with a winning record.

The Pilots have struggled mightily in recent years, going a combined 14-47 since 1990. But they had one of their most successful seasons in some time last year with a 4-5 record, including a 3-4 mark in the Black Diamond Conference.

Cairo returns all but seven players from last year, although the Pilots lost most of their regulars at the skill positions. But Woods likes what he sees.

"We're an interesting team," he said. "I think we'll be able to replace the skill people. The thing is they don't have much experience.

"But I think we might be able to do it (have a winning season) this year. It depends on injuries and how well our young backfield responds."

It won't take the Pilots long to see where they stand. Tonight's season opener at home will be against defending Illinois Class 3A state champion Carterville.

"They were a great football team last year. They've lost quite a few players so we'll see what happens," Woods said. "I'm very happy with the way things are going for us so far. The kids' attitude has been great. All we need to do is play a game."

Cairo's inexperienced backfield will feature new starters in senior quarterback Jason Brinkmeyer; senior Russell Howard and sophomore Ronnell Spearman at running back; and bruising 6-foot, 205-pound senior Melvin Duncan at fullback. Duncan was moved from the offensive line.

Those players will operate behind a large offensive line that is one of the team's most experienced areas. Senior Benny Avant (6-1, 275) is a two-time all-conference player while senior Dwayne Fowler (5-9, 230) is also a two-year starter.

Also up front are senior Craig Fitzgerald (6-0, 200), junior Lawrence Buell (6-5, 260) and junior Jermaine Smith (6-1, 215).

"We've got experience and size on the line," said Woods.

Experience returns at wide receiver in the form of junior Vance Tuck, who started last season, and senior James Watkins, who started two years ago but did not play last season.

At tight end will be junior Justin Vaughn (6-3, 200), who has some pretty impressive bloodlines. He's the son of former basketball great Chico Vaughn.

Many of the offensive players will turn around and also play defense, including Duncan, a two-time all-conference performer at linebacker.
