LADY TIGERS SLIP PAST SECKMAN 9-8

ARNOLD -- Behind two home runs by Ashlie Voerg, Cape Girardeau Central staved off a comeback attempt on the road Monday, holding on for a 9-8 softball victory over Seckman.

Central (13-6) led 9-5 entering the seventh inning, but Seckman, Arnold's new high school, scored three runs to make the score 9-8 with no outs. Central held the hosts from there.

The Lady Tigers totaled 16 hits. Ashlie Voerg had three hits and Erica McDonald added three hits and a double. Michelle Lunsford, Courtney Haman and Amber Voerg each had two hits.

Central's Kathy Michel went the distance, allowing 13 hits, striking out four and walking three.

Central's Cassie Gross earned the win as the JV team won 11-1.

Central will host Jackson on Wednesday.

Goreville (Ill.) 2, Jackson 1

JACKSON -- Jackson allowed two unearned runs and lost at home Monday.

Goreville scored in the second and sixth innings. Jackson scored its run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Emily Sander.

For the Lady Indians, who had seven hits, Carrie Myers went 2-for-2 and Caroline Harper went 2-for-3.

Christy Teets took the loss.

Jackson will travel to Cape Central on Wednesday.

Jackson 3, Belleville Althoff 2

JACKSON -- The Indians netted the game's first three goals and then held on for a narrow victory.

Nathan Windeknecht, Chris Schuette and Raju Dirnberger all scored first-half goals as Jackson (6-3-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Althoff scored a goal just before halftime and netted the game' final goal with 10 minutes left to play.

"Belleville is a real good ball control team," said Jackson coach Bonnie Knowlan. "It was a real good game."

Jackson won the JV contest 3-1.

VOLLEYBALL

Leopold 7-15-15

Meadow Heights 15-12-7

PATTON -- Leopold found itself in a precarious position, but rallied on the road to defeat rival Meadow Heights.

In front of their home crown, the Lady Panthers won the opening set convincingly. But Leopold bounced back to improve to 13-1-1.

"We started off slow and I think they finally decided they had to play and kicked it in," said Leopold coach Leanne Huffman. "But Meadow Heights was ready for us. They were really fired up and ready to play."

Alicia Halter led Leopold's attack with nine kills and also turned in nine digs. Sarah Gowen had a team-high 14 assists and added two kills.

Bell City 3-15-15

Cape Central 15-3-4

BELL CITY -- Bell City coach Carl Ritter didn't play any usual starters in the first game and Central took advantage.

The starters then entered in the second game and the Lady Cubs cruised to a win at home Monday.

Bell City improved to 15-1-1, dropping Central to 0-8-2.

For Bell City, Leslie Lee had four kills, 10 assists and six digs, April Jackson had six kills, and Heather O'Reilly totaled six digs.

Farmington 7-15-17

Jackson 15-10-15

JACKSON -- Jackson dropped a close match at home Monday and fell to 13-4-4.

Valerie Jansen had 11 kills, freshman Andrea Koeper 10, Becky King eight and Chrissi Glastetter seven. Heather Brown had 19 assists, Glastetter totaled seven blocks and Sara Nothdurft and Jamie Heitz each added six.

Jackson's JV won 3-15, 15-13, 15-11, and Farmington's freshmen won 15-5, 15-0.

Jackson will travel to Ste. Genevieve today.

Notre Dame 15-15

Woodland 5-9

MARBLE HILL -- Kelli Canfield registered six kills as the Lady Bulldogs swept Woodland on the road Monday.

Notre Dame improved to 7-4-2 with the win.

Notre Dame also won the JV 15-10, 15-5.

Sikeston 15-7-15

Scott City 5-15-6

SCOTT CITY -- Sikeston needed three sets to foil the Lady Rams attempt at their first win of the season.

Jessica Dees had eight blocks to lead the defensive effort for Scott City (0-10-2).

Sikeston also won the JV match 15-9, 15-11.

Perryville 15-9-15

Fredericktown 10-15-9

FREDERICKTOWN -- Perryville improved to 9-7-3 with its road victory Monday.

For the Lady Pirates, Laura Ernst had 11 kills and nine digs, Shannon Dreyer handed 13 assists, Amy Verseman totaled 14 assists, eight kills and three blocks and Renee Kaempfe had five kills and four blocks.

Fredericktown's JV won 15-13, 15-13.

Perryville will travel to Hillsboro today.

GIRLS TENNIS

Cape Central 6, Jackson 3

JACKSON -- Cape Central improved to 9-0 in duals with its win at Jackson Monday.

In a No. 1 singles match that featured two foreign exchange students, Jackson's Lena Steinberg, of Germany, beat Central's Lisa Ahstrom, of Sweden, 9-7. Steinberg also beat Ahstrom when the two met at Central Sept. 16.

Central's JV won 12-0.
