TIGERS END SKID WITH 5-4 WIN OVER MULES

POPLAR BLUFF -- Cape Central's baseball team broke a five-game losing streak Thursday with a 5-4 victory over Poplar Bluff.

In breaking the skid, Central (5-8, 2-3 conference) avenged Thursday's 15-7 loss to the Mules.

"It felt pretty good just to win a game today," said Cape Central coach Steve Williams. "Our kids came ready to play today. The effort and attitude was very good today and it was reflected in the way we played."

Michael Minner recorded the win on the mound, going the distance and striking out nine, walking three and allowing four hits.

Shane Gipson, Chris Bradshaw and Andy Sweet each had two hits in Central's eight-hit attack.

Central trailed 3-1 after two innings, but the Tigers scored a single run in the fourth and three in the fifth for a 5-3 advantage. Poplar Bluff closed the scoring with a run in the sixth.

In JV play, Central won 8-1 behind the two-hit pitching of Aaron Wolfe.

Mike Sullivan, Rick Davis and Ty Fidler each had two hits as Central improved to 3-3.

Sikeston 10, Jackson 0

SIKESTON -- After a one-hit win over Notre Dame Tuesday, the Jackson Indians found themselves on the wrong end of a one-hitter against Sikeston.

Jackson's Justin Gladish led off the game with a base hit and it proved to be the only safety for the Indians. Jackson fell to 5-3.

Josh Adams took the loss in the five-inning game, dropping his record to 0-3.

"Josh has pitched into some tough luck," Indian coach Sam Sides said. "He seems to get matched up against our opponents' best pitcher every time out."

The Indians only sent 16 batters to the plate and 10 of those struck out.

Windsor 8, Perryville 2

PERRYVILLE -- Windsor scored seven runs in the first inning off Perryville starter Matt Meyr to cruise to a Jefferson County Conference win.

Windsor ripped seven hits in the first inning, including two home runs, to pounce on the Pirates. Perryville slipped to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in league play.

Meyr settled down after the first, allowing only one more run and four hits the rest of the game. He struck out seven and walked only one.

"After the first inning, Matt pitched a great game," said Perryville coach Dennis Glueck. "But we're giving up too many runs in the first inning and it seems like we're always playing catch-up ball."

Perryville will be the visiting team Monday against crosstown rival St. Vincent.

Dexter 12, Chaffee 4

DEXTER -- Four Chaffee errors led to six Dexter runs in the fourth inning as the Red Devils fell to 2-6.

Chaffee committed seven errors in all. Tommy Stidham was the tough-luck starter for the Red Devils, getting pegged for eight of the runs in 3 1/3 innings. Only two were earned.

Chaffee held a 3-2 lead heading to the fourth before Dexter's big inning. Jeremy Vandeven tallied three hits and 2 RBIs in the loss.

The Red Devils will host the four-team Chaffee Tournament this Saturday. Chaffee will start play against East Prairie at 9 a.m. Dexter and Advance will start at approximately 11 a.m.

Kelly 14, Delta 4

DELTA -- Kelly broke open a 2-1 game with six runs in the third inning and went on to a five-inning victory over the Bobcats.

Denver Stuckey picked up the win on the mound and also had three of Kelly's 13 hits. Stuckey struck out eight, walked two and allowed five hits.

Ben Klipfel and Brandin Pattongill each added two hits and scored three runs for Kelly (5-3). John Welter and Bradley Kolwyck had two hits apiece.

For Delta (1-4), Kenny Goebler and Garrett DeBrock each had two hits.

Softball

Oran 16, Scott Co. Central 14

ORAN -- In a wild game which saw 37 walks issued, Oran emerged victorious.

Oran pitcher Kelly Wheeler issued 21 of the passes, but came away with the win. Wheeler struck out 12 and allowed seven hits.

Oran batters lashed out 11 hits and coaxed 16 walks. Sara Bouge had three of the hits and scored four runs. Melissa Loper, Sara Heisserer and Crystal Cochran each added two hits. Loper knocked in four runs.

Laura Johnson collected three hits for Scott County.

Scott County took a 12-9 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but saw Oran push across seven runs.

Kelly 13, Delta 0

DELTA -- Kim Riley and Britany Lambert combined for Kelly's second shutout of the year as the Lady Hawks improved to 8-0 with a win over Delta.

Riley (5-0) pitched the first three innings and Lambert the final two. Both allowed just one hit a piece to Delta.

Ashley Beggs and Brandi Hamm paced the Lady Hawks' offense with 4-for-4 performances. Both had one RBI each.

Jennifer McNiel, Audrey Burford and Tiffany Glastetter all ripped two hits as Kelly pounded out 17 hits.

Golf

Jackson 154, Sikeston 155

SIKESTON -- Jackson squeaked out a one-stroke victory over Sikeston Thursday to remain undefeated on the season.

Jackson (11-0) saw Travis Reiminger and Clint Faries both shoot 38s on the par-35 layout at Sikeston Country Club. John Litz and Tyler Luebbers each carded 39s to round out Jackson's team score.

Sikeston had two players tie for medalist at 37.

"They have a good young team," said Jackson coach Ron Cook. "They'll be tough the next couple of years. It's a good thing we got them this time."

Jackson will face Cape Central and New Madrid Monday at Bent Creek.

Central second in triangular

NEW MADRID -- The host squad downed Central and Portageville in a competitive triangular.

New Madrid shot a four-man score of 163 for the victory. Central was seven strokes back with 170. Portageville totalled 177.

Chris Patterson led Central with a nine-hole score of 39. Other qualifying scorers for the Tigers were Dan Grossbeck (42), Bryan Welker (43) and Kent Phillips 46.

New Madrid's John Gimsley won medalist honors with a 38.

Girls Soccer

Cape Central 4, Marion (Ill.) 0

MARION, Ill. -- The Lady Tigers remained undefeated by scoring all four goals before halftime to improve to 9-0.

Nichole Thiele and Kim Aslinger combined on two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game to push Central ahead.

Thiele scored first on an assist from Aslinger at the 7:00 mark. Four minutes later, Thiele assisted on an Aslinger goal to put the Lady Tigers ahead 3-0.

Lorie Bittle scored on an assist from Christy Schmidt between those two scored. Mindy Hoffman iced the game with the final score at the 37-minute mark. Annie Christian assisted on the final goal.

In junior varsity action, Central topped Marion 1-0.

Emilee Atchley scored at the 49-minute mark for the only score of the game. Rachel Hessenkemper assisted.

The Lady Tiger JV improved to 3-1-1.

Cape Central 7, Poplar Bluff 2

POPLAR BLUFF -- The Tigers improved to 6-3 in dual meets with win at Poplar Bluff. The junior varsity also won, improving its mark to 6-2-1.

Central host Parkway West, one of the top teams in the state, Saturday at 10 a.m.
