The pace figures to pick up considerably at Southeast Missouri State University's football practices today as the Indians don full padding for the first time.

For the first three days of full-squad practice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the Indians went through their paces in limited gear as required under NCAA regulations.

But today the Indians can put on their full gear for the first time, which should make for some spirited workouts as two-a-days continue at Southeast.

"It's kind of a rite of passage in fall camp," said Southeast head coach John Mumford of putting on the full pads. "The kids are excited about it."

After the first three days of full-squad practice, Mumford continues to be pleased with the way things are progressing. For one thing, injuries have been virtually non-existent so far.

"We've had just a few minor things here and there, but nothing really to speak of," Mumford said. "That's really encouraging."

Quarterback Heath Graham, the highly-touted transfer from Southern Mississippi, has been bothered by a sore arm, but Mumford said it is nothing serious and Graham should be fine.

While Graham has not been throwing much in practice lately, returning starter Justin Martini -- who will battle Graham for the regular quarterback position -- has impressed Mumford.

"Justin has a good command of the offense right now," said Mumford. "He's been doing a lot of good things."

Southeast's offensive line, a real sore spot last year, has looked considerably improved, according to Mumford, while the defense overall has looked extremely solid.

"We're better (in the offensive line). We're still not as deep as we'd like to be so we have to avoid injuries," he said. "The defense looks strong at all three levels -- the secondary, the linebackers and the line."

Added Mumford, "Our young guys are real attentive and the older guys are doing well. We're still a very young football team. I'm really impressed with the coachability of the guys. The key for us will be to pull together."

The Indians will continue to practice twice daily until school starts on Aug. 25. The season opener is set for Saturday, Aug. 30, when NAIA Lambuth visits Houck Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
