A number of events are planned Monday to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Others events are scheduled throughout February as part of Black History Month. The schedule: Monday The 14th annual Memorial Breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. at the Show Me Center. Judge Leslie Isaiah Gains, a senior partner in the Lawson and Gaines law firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, will be the speaker. Tickets are $6.50 for the public and $3 for students. The schedule:

Monday

The 14th annual Memorial Breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. at the Show Me Center. Judge Leslie Isaiah Gains, a senior partner in the Lawson and Gaines law firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, will be the speaker. Tickets are $6.50 for the public and $3 for students. A gospel celebration is planned for 2 p.m. at Venture court of West Park Mall. The Black Student Fellowship Mass Gospel Choir and students from local schools will sing.

A community celebration is planned at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 235 Broadway. The eighth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award will be presented. The Rev. Dr. Rhymes Moncure, senior pastor of Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia, will be guest speaker.

Wednesday

A "March for Tomorrow" will be held from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. The march will celebrate King's past marches and will be followed by a short program.

Jan. 23

A Carver Day celebration is set for 2 p.m. at Southeast Missouri State University Center Ballroom. The event recognizes the contributions of university staff and community residents in the areas of science and community service.

Jan. 26

"Conversations on Community -- A Special Session of Embracing the University Portrait" will be held at the Indian room of the University Center. The event, planned from 6:30 to 8 p.m., will include a presentation on the principles of community.

Jan. 27

Common Hour: "Racial Legacies and Learning." The discussion includes possible solutions to the question of how higher education and its local communities prepare students to address the legacies of racism and the opportunity for racial recognition in the United States.

Jan. 28-Feb. 25

Annual read-a-thon for Cape Girardeau elementary students. The event encourages cultural diversity through reading.

Feb. 1-28

Book sale from noon to 3 p.m. in University Center lobby.

Feb. 1

Minority student programs open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Center, room 310.

Feb. 1-6

Katherine Dunham Dance Residency. Katherine Dunham is a modern dance choreographer with African and Caribbean influences. The company is based in St. Louis.

Feb. 3

Common Hour: Percussion workshop at Parker Dance Studio beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Master Class Dunham Technique at Parker Dance Studio from 6-7 p.m.

Feb. 5

Katherine Dunham Dance Company performance at Academic Auditorium at 6 p.m. Contact Marc Strauss at 651-5157 for information. Tickets are $5 for the public and $2 for students.

Feb. 8

African-American read-in chain at 3 p.m. in University Center program lounge. A read-around of African-American authors is part of national read-in chain.

Feb. 11

Knowledge Bowl at 7 p.m. in University Center lobby. A quiz bowl to test knowledge of black history and culture.

Feb. 14

Annual Michael Davis Lecture at 7 p.m. in University Center Ballroom. The event, named for a department major killed in a hazing incident, will feature Chuck Stone, founding president of the National Association of Black Journalists. Contact Dr. R. Ferrell Ervin at 651-2241 for information.

Feb. 17

Common Hour at 12:30 p.m. at University Center program lounge. Open discussion on impact of affirmative action on college admissions.

Minority Career Exploration Dinner from 5-8 p.m. in Dempster Atrium. Includes speaker and discussion of career paths.

Feb. 24

Mwanamugimu Essay Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. in University Center lobby. Contest between students researching different aspects of African culture and countries.

Culture Night from 8-10 p.m. at University Center club. Displays of artistic talents, expressions.

Feb. 26-27

Black Movie Weekend includes viewing of black movies from past three decades.
