JACKSON -- Three Jackson High School students are among 104 selected from across the state to participate in the Missouri-All-State Band.

Three three are junior flautist Jessica Terry, senior alto saxophonist Ben Hinchey and freshman trombonist Bill Schwent.

They were among more than 900 Missouri high school students who auditioned for the band Dec. 5 at Hickman High School in Columbia.

This is Terry's third her to be selected to the Missouri All-State Band. She also is a member of the All-State Orchestra. She studies with Paul Thompson at Southeast Missouri State University and plans to major in music in college. She is the daughter of Mark and Tina Terry.

Hinchey plays in both the symphonic and jazz bands at Jackson High School and occasionally performs with one of the area's Big Bands. He is considering attending college in Boston. He is the son of Diane Hinchey of Jackson and Michael Hinchey of Boston.

Schwent, the son of Jackson High School band director Patricia Schwent and her husband, Tim, is continuing a family tradition begun by his sister, Nicole. She was first chair alto sax in the All-State Band for three years. He has studied locally with Nick Leist, Mark Goodwin and Kristen Wieser and is only the fourth Jackson High School freshman to be selected for the All-State Band.

The band will perform at the Missouri Music Educators Conference to be held Wednesday through Jan. 30. Under the direction of Alan McMurray, a professor of conducting and director of bands a the University of Colorado at Boulder, the band will perform Percy Granger's "Children's March," J.S. Bach's "My Jesus, Oh What Anguish," and the finale of David Maslanka's Symphony No. 2.

That performance is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 30 in Salon A at Marriott's Tan-Tar-A Resort.

Directors of the Jackson High School Band are Patricia Schwent, Scott Vangilder and Tom Broussard.
