Jim Hendrickson shared the experience of his 31 years as a pharmacist as guest speaker at the January meeting of the American Legion Post # 158 January 12 in Jackson.

Hendrickson, from Southeast Hospital, talked about medication and noted that 10 to 15 percent of all emergency room patients are there because they had not properly managed their medication. Hendrickson cautioned the audience to take care in properly using prescription medication and herbal medications (sold as food supplements) as well.

Thirty-nine members attended the meeting, presided over by Commander Robert Hartle. Kenny Brown and Don Gast were introduced as new members of the post.

During the meeting a motion was made or the post to be a corporate sponsor for the Cape Veterans' Home Flag Day Golf Tournament, at a cost of $1,500. The motion passed and will be presented for a second reading at the February meeting.

Chaplain Charles Hutson presented the memorial service for 1998. Nineteen World War II veterans and two from Korea died in 1998. They were (with number of years a member): Gilbert Gross, 44; Tony Caruso, 46; Melvin L. Walker, 42, Lee Roy Allen, 10, W. Shelby Brown, 50, Harry "Jim" Schnurbush, 42, Robert Frank Robinson, 9, Ottis Orrell, 22, Henry H. Sappington, 34, Paul Q. Short, 53, John W. Golden, 29, Alphonse H. Stoverink, 19, Leonard Darnbach, 41, Charles L. Seabaugh, 54, Alvin Glenn Starzinger, 43; Wilber "Wib" Bangert, 53; Edgar O. Jones, 28, Billy K. Morrison, 10; Kermit G. Nations, Sr., 51; Arnell G. Godwin, 43; Edwin R. Puls, 54; Harold M. Hope, 31. Robinson and Gross were the Korean War veterans; the others fought in World War II.

Bill Poe, child welfare, club room and hospital chairman, reported that the hospital equipment is being well used. A motion was made to give the Don Lewis family $500 from the disaster relief fund, due to a house fire.

Leon Laurentius, house report chairman, reported that the house was rented 35 times in 1998. A motion was made and approved to allow the county to house the hall for elections.

Membership Chairman Keith Seabaugh reported that the post now has 569 members -- 84.7 percent of the goal. The goal for February 10 is 90 percent of the total goal. Seabaugh also announced that "Give me Five" is still in effect until the Legion birthday.

Carlton Meyer, flag chairman, reported that three flags have been sold and that the Missouri flag has been replaced. A motion was made and seconded to purchase flag etiquette books for local students at a cost of $124. The motion carried.

A motion was made and passed to give $250 to the memorial scholarship fund. Contributions made to the fund during the past month were: David & Brenda Flugge, in memory of Kermit Nations; Dr. T. Wayne Lewis and Linda Lewis, in memory of Wib Bangert; and Bob & Adell Hartle in memory of Arnell Godwin.

Mike Proctor, ceremonial chairman, reported on one service for James E. McClard.

Benton Barber, who was not present, won the drawing for $31.75 in the pot.

The next meeting will be at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Bingo will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.
