About 200 households in the Tanglewood, Singing Hills and Cape Rock Village area were notified to boil their water Thursday afternoon after a 6-inch water main was accidentally punctured on Old Sprigg Street.

The resulting lower pressure automatically required the Cape Girardeau Department of Public Works to issue a boil-water order as a precaution.

The area is north of the Cape Girardeau city limits but is served by city water. City workers went door-to-door delivering the boil-water order.

Such orders usually are issued for a 48-hour period because of the time required to test the water to insure its quality.

Cape Girardeau Public Works Director Doug Leslie said the leak was expected to be repaired by about 9 p.m. Thursday night.

Leslie said a construction crew putting in cable drilled through the water main.
