SCOTT CITY -- Motorists accessing I-55 or the Route 61 ramp in Scott City will soon see three new and improved traffic signals.
The updated signals will be prompted by sensors in the pavement which communicate that a vehicle has stopped and is waiting at the white stop line. In addition to safety factors, this communications system will provide an efficient and more convenient flow of traffic for motorists.
"The area has been continually experiencing increases in traffic," stated engineer Mark Phillips of the Missouri Department of Transportation.
"Currently, over 25,000 vehicles pass through the area on an average day," Phillips said.
During the coming weeks, engineers will perform calculations for determining the timing and sequencing of the three signals.
"We will continue to monitor the intersections after installation to make sure the timing is at the best possible level for motorists to be safe without experiencing unnecessary traffic delays," Phillips noted.
After the timing calculations are finished, installation of the new traffic lights and new pavement striping will complete the improvement.
"We appreciate the cooperation we have received from the city officials," said Phillips.
The project is expected to be completed by early summer.
