Southeast Missouri State University has announced its fall lineup of mini business workshops for the community. The classes are designed for busy people and cover such areas as Windows 95/98, Microsoft Office 97/2000, office ergonomics and web page development.

All classes are offered to the community through the Administrative Services department in the Harrison College of Business. They take advantage of the high-tech computer labs at Dempster Hall. Each participant has a Pentium computer available for hands-on use in learning sessions.

Classes are structured around three-hour sessions. Some meet once and others meet twice.

New to the lineup this fall is a session on Office Ergonomics, which deals with helping office workers be more productive while minimizing stress on the body. An advanced class in Excel has also been added.

The six-hour classes run $85 each and three-hour sessions are $45. The cost includes all course materials.

Upcoming workshops include:

Introduction to Computers.

Three hours. Choose Sept. 9, 1-4 or Nov. 9, 6-9.

It provides a non-technical introduction to the basic features of using computers. It is designed for the beginner with little or no experience with computers.

Introduction to Windows 95/98

A non-technical introduction to the basics of this fundamental operating system. Learn navigation skills and cover such topics as moving and sizing windows, using dialog boxes, creating folders, organizing desktops, creating shortcuts and customizing start and program menus. Class provides .6 of continuing education credit.

Six hours. Choose from Sept. 15, 8:30-11:30 and 1-4 p.m.; Oct. 18 and 20 from 6-9 p.m.; or Nov. 15 and 17 from 1-4 p.m.

Web Page Development with FrontPage

Learn to design and create web pages with FrontPage Editor using tools and menu options. Prerequisites: Windows 95/98 or equivalent experience, Intro. to Word and Internet experience.

Six hours. Oct. 5 & 7, 1-4 p.m.

Office Ergonomics

Learn the correct posture you should assume while working at your computer or desk as well as tips and exercises.

Three hours. Oct. 19, 1-4 p.m.

Introduction to Word

Basic introduction to using computers to produce letters, reports and other documents for business or personal use. Earn .6 of CEU. Prerequisite: Windows 95/98 class or equivalent experience.

Six hours: Sept. 21 and 23, 6-9 p.m.

Intermediate Word Applications

Covers enhanced features of Word to create headers and footers, create tables and columns, use search and replace and perform mail merges for form letters and labels. Prerequisite intro to Word or equivalent experience. Earn .6 of CEU.

Six hours: Oct. 6, 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Making Presentations with PowerPoint

Make presentations like the professionals for on-screen presentations, flyers, informational handouts or overhead projections. Create, save and print documents with text, clip art, charts and spreadsheets. Earn .6 of CEU. Prerequisite Windows 95/98 class or equivalent experience.

Six hours: Oct. 21, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Introduction to Excel

Learn the basics of creating and using spreadsheets to keep track of expenditures for business or home. Topics cover creating and entering formulas, data input as well as creating charts. Earn .6 CEU.

Six hours: Sept. 27 & 29, 1-4 p.m.

Intermediate Excel Applications

Goes beyond the basics to include working with multiple worksheets/workbooks, creating advanced formulas, printing options and database features. Prerequisite is intro to Excel or previous experience. Earn .6 CEU.

Six hours: Oct. 13, 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Intro to Access: Learn the basics of creating and using databases to keep track of customers, mailing lists or projects. Earn .6 CEU. Prerequisite Windows 95/98 class or equivalent experience.

Six hours: Oct. 26 & 28, 1-4 p.m.

Intermediate Access Applications

Explore additional database concepts, design data entry screens, create and modify forms, add fields and graphics to forms, create and design reports, and create labels. Earn .6 CEU. Prerequisite: Intro to Access to equivalent experience.

Six hours: Nov. 2 & 4, 1-4 p.m.
