COLUMBIA -- William Schabbing, veterinarian at Jackson, hascompleted a 43-hour course in beef cattle nutrition, according to Bob Larson, veterinarian at the University of Missouri.

The nutrition course was offered by the MU College of Veterinary Medicine Office of Continuing Education and the University Extension Commercial Agriculture program. Larson is a member of the Commercial Agriculture beef focus team.

Nine Missouri veterinarians came to the MU campus for three, two-day sessions to complete the course. Larson and fellow beef focus team members Richard Randle, veterinarian, and KC Olson, beef nutritionist, were primary instructors for the course.

The training focused on supplements needed for cows, replacement heifers, and stocker cattle in both pasture-based and hay or silage-based feeding situations, Larson said. The veterinarians also became proficient in the use and interpretation of a ration formulation computer program.

"By completing the course Dr. Schabbing is now able to strengthen his advice for his clientele by offering the latest knowledge and economic considerations for nutritional management of beef cattle," Larson said.

"As Missouri beef producers strive to remain competitive with beef producers from other states and around the world keeping nutritional costs at an optimum becomes increasingly important," Larson continued. "Dr. Schabbing is now able to offer advice and services that should aid beef producers who might have nutritional problems."
