A collision between a tractor-trailer truck and a pickup truck on Interstate 55 resulted in two injuries and logs scattered along the road Monday, police said.

Charles J. Lance, of Scott City, was driving southbound on I-55 about 10 a.m. when his 1965 Ford pickup began to drift from the right lane onto the shoulder, reported Patrolman Kenneth Fountain.

When Lance, who was towing a trailer of logs, tried to pull back onto the road, he overcompensated. The pickup's trailer jackknifed into a tractor-trailer truck near state Route 74 driven by Stephen D. Jenkins, of Kearneysville, W. Va., Fountain reported.

Both Lance and his passenger, Gerald E. McCloud of Scott City, were hurt. They were transported to Southeast Missouri Hospital where Lance was treated for a broken pelvis and McCloud for a broken ankle, police reported.

Police were able to open one interstate lane for traffic within 10 minutes after the collision, Cpl. Kevin Orr said. However, a second accident slowed traffic further. As members of the fire department assisted with removing the logs from the road, an unidentified woman drove into the back of another car stopped on the road.

No serious injuries were reported in the second collision, police said.

Both lanes were open to normal traffic by 10:53 a.m., said Capt. Bob Kembell of the fire department.
