HOW THE ADOPTIONS WORK

One hundred wild horses and 50 burros will be available for adoption July 10 and 11 at Flickerwood Arena.

The animals can be viewed from 1 to 5 p.m. July 9 at the arena. Dave Seay, a professional horse gentler and equine educator, will conduct an equine seminar at 4 p.m. July 9.

At 7 a.m. on July 10, the names of those who have been pre-approved for adoption will be called off alphabetically. The names of those who are present will be pulled out of a bucket. That will determine the order they will choose their horse or burro in. The drawing will close at 8 a.m., and the adoption will begin, lasting until 5 p.m.

Seay will give gentling demonstrations at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m. July 10, using horses out of the pens.

If any horses and burros remain, the adoption will continue from 8 a.m. until noon July 11.

The adoption fee is $125 per animal. To qualify to adopt an animal, applicants must have sturdy corrals at least 6 feet high for horses and 5 feet high for burros. Applicants also must be able to provide shelter for the animal, transportation and a means of caring for the animal.
