Openings remain for the community Beginning Internet training scheduled Thursday.

The classes are co-sponsored by the Southeast Missourian and Southeast Missouri State University, and are taught by members of the SEMissourian.com web staff.

Participants have their own computer with high-speed Internet access for the hands-on session. The session will last two hours, from 1-3 p.m., at the Dempster Hall on the university campus.

The sessions fill up quickly so early registration is encouraged. Last Thursday's class was filled.

Since the classes began in 1997, more than 1,000 people from throughout the region have received Internet training through this program. Participants have ranged in age from 8 to 94.

Interested persons can call the Southeast Missouri at 335-6611, Ext. 151, and ask for Sharon Rogers. Registration is limited to 38 individuals per session.

The class is geared for beginners, and individuals will receive a number of informational handouts.

-- Thursday, Oct. 14, 1-3 p.m.

-- Tuesday, Nov. 2, 7-9 p.m.

-- Thursday, Dec. 2, 7-9 p.m.

-- Thursday, Dec. 16, 1-3 p.m.

In addition, an intermediate class will be offered twice in the fall session: Thursday, Oct. 7, 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 18, 1-3 p.m.

The intermediate class covers such topics as e-mail, chat, screensavers, downloading and installing programs in more detail. Again, a number of information handouts are distributed to participants.

Cost is $20 for either the beginning or intermediate class, and payment is required prior to registration. The cost is $10 for newspaper subscribers. New subscribers can pay $13.50 for one month and receive the class free.

An admission ticket and parking pass will be issued upon payment. Tickets are transferable but nonrefundable.
