SHAWNEE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS GIVE DONATION TO HUMANE SOCIETY

MCCLURE, Ill. -- A stray dog adopted Shawnee Elementary South students in McClure, Ill., shortly after school started.

Even though she became a favorite of students and staff at the school, the dog needed a permanent home, so she was brought to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau and put up for adoption.

But the students and staff at Shawnee didn't forget her. They called regularly to see if "Shawnee" had found a new home. The children took up a collection to provide for the needs of "Shawnee" and others like her while awaiting adoption.

"Shawnee" found a new home, but students decided to continue their work with the shelter. They donated part of their activity money to the shelter to care for homeless animals. They purchased over 100 pounds of pet food, which was delivered to the shelter by students Emilie Wilson and Trenton Colyer and Principal Rick Goodman.
