Gov. Mel Carnahan has appointed Southeast Missouri State University faculty member Dr. Frank Nickell to the Mississippi River Parkway Commission.

Nickell will serve the remainder of an unexpired term and could be reappointed to a five-year term later this year.

The commission works to preserve, promote and enhance the scenic, historic and recreational resources of the Mississippi River.

The nine-member commission also seeks to foster economic growth and develop the national, scenic and historic parkway known as the Great River Road.

The Great River Road is a river parkway system that uses existing Mississippi River valley roads.

Nickell is an associate professor of history and directs the Center for Regional History. He was awarded the Faculty Merit Award in 1992.
