Tabulations at Cape Girardeau County Office of Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation show 432 farmers have signed contracts to set aside 5,500 acres of wheat and corn land; signup, which began Feb. 5, ends March 16; it is expected about 1,400 county farmers will enter program by deadline.

Five bids on culverts county will purchase for road maintenance projects this year were opened and tabled by County Court Monday morning; bids were turned over to County Highway Engineer Otto M. Fluegge for study.

Petitions for formation of tax-supported rural fire protection district in Cape Girardeau County are being circulated, another step in procedure that could leave rural areas without fire protection for much of the year; minimum of 100 signatures is required.

Jackson Savings and Loan Association will open branch office in Marble Hill, first savings and loan office of any kind ever in Bollinger County; it will be named Bollinger County Branch office.

50 years ago, 1948

Resignation of the Rev. H.A. Selves was formally presented to congregation of First Baptist Church Sunday to become effective March 15; he has been pastor of church for 6 1/2 years, having come here in November 1941 from Louisville, Ky.; he has accepted position as associate to state Sunday School secretary, the Rev. L.A. Foster, in Missouri Baptist General Association.

More than 400 persons attended morning service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, where 40th anniversary of dedication of church was observed; the Rev. W.G. Langehennig, who was celebrating his 86th birthday, was presented a gift.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Conder and son, Jimmy, have moved to Walter A. Kasten farm near Burfordville where they will be associated with Kasten in livestock raising and grain production; Conder was formerly employed by Kasten Brick Co. as truck driver.

Workers have completed remodeling and redecorating at Lichtenegger grocery store; new coat of white paint was applied to interior and new apparatus installed in modernizing store.

Workers are erecting partition in Hotel Jackson lobby to make quarters for Steinborn's watch-making shop; shop will be at east side of entrance using large front windows near street; Friedrich electric shop is also to occupy larger quarters on west side of building.

75 years ago, 1923

Jackson now has an avowed, sure-enough, honest-to-goodness candidate for mayor in person of J.R. Bowman, who has finally consented to make race after having been solicited by many of citizens; "Jim," as everyone calls him, would make good mayor; he is successful in managing his own affairs and can safely be entrusted with management of public affairs.

Judge John A. Snider and Sheriff William Browning, as well as some of local attorneys, left for Cape Girardeau early Monday to attend opening of February term of Court of Common Pleas.

William Hoffman has announced his intention of being candidate for alderman of fourth ward.

Minnie Denneke has returned to Jackson after several weeks stay at Houck; she is with Mrs. Emanuel Milde.

Gilbert Heinberg is spending few days at home with his parents; Heinberg is student of Washington University.
