Volunteers are needed to help fix up and clean up Cape Girardeau's city parks for the 13th annual "Friends of the Parks Day" April 18.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Capaha Park, and work will continue from 9 to noon, with lunch provided for all participants.

The event usually draws about 500 volunteers, said Penny Blandford, recreation supervisor for the city of Cape Girardeau. Blandford is coordinating the event.

"We're going to be working in most of the major parks in the city," Blandford said, including Capaha, Arena, Washington, Indian, Dennis Scivally and the Jaycees Municipal Golf Course.

Volunteers' chores will be varied.

"We do everything from plant flower beds to clean out Capaha pool. We do a lot of painting and water-sealing shelters," she said."It's what we call our spring cleanup."
