Growing opposition to tax-supported rural fire protection district for Cape Girardeau County was voiced at Circuit Court hearing late monday afternoon; Circuit Judge Stanley A. Grimm withheld his expected ruling on petitions calling for election on proposed district to enable opponents to file their petitions; judge also delayed action to enable promoters of district to check validity of signatures on their petitions.

Resolutions awarding contracts for paving two streets and construction of bridge have been approved by Jackson City Council; also adopted were resolutions declaring it necessary to pave portions of Dallas Street and Strawberry Lane; Loos and Hoffmeister Construction Co. of Jackson will pave Ohio Street from Madison to Monroe, and Westlane from Highway 72 to point 652 feet north of Oak; Pensel Construction Co. of Jackson was apparent low bidder on contract to build bridge along Adams Street over Goose Creek.

Gene Jaco was elected 1973-74 president of Lions Club at meeting at Terrace Restaurant Monday evening; other officers were first vice president, P.M. Kurre; second vice president, William Sexton; secretary-treasurer, Warren Wilson; lion tamer, Kay Kracke, and tail twister, Earl Siebert.

William A. Heyde Jr., prominent Jackson resident, died April 12; Heyde, 59 years old, was native of Jackson; he attended Jackson public schools and as student played on several championship football teams and was named to All-Conference Team; he was superintendent of former Cape County Milling Co. here for nine years, and for past 26 years was field representative for Millers Mutual Insurance Association of Alton, Ill.

Part of Wagner Machine & Welding Co. will be moved this week to Absogood Packing Co. building on West Main; to be moved are machines necessary in making of electric welding rod holders, connectors and heavy duty electrical ground clamps for welding machines; increase in sales has required more adequate facilities for manufacture of these products.

There were 24 applications and admittance cards issued for examinations to be given April 17 by C.J. Ritter for position of substitute clerk-carrier in Jackson post office; exam will be given at high school.

Mr. and Mrs. William Tate are residing at Hotel Jackson while looking for new residence; Tate is new pharmacist at Fulenwider drug store; they are lately from St. Louis, but their original home was in Oklahoma.

At recent meeting of members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, it was resolved to secure architect firm of Bohnsack & Pearce of St. Louis to prepare sketches and detailed plans for new school building which will be constructed on lot west of present school.

Ivan Schottel of King City has been elected to coach and teach physical education at Jackson High School; Schottel played football and basketball four years at Maryville, coached basketball in northwest Missouri during 1946-47 season and was freshman football coach at Maryville State College during past season.

George Grant Jr. is getting around on crutches, result of injury sustained recently while working around Friedrich-Seybold Electric Shop; Grant was on scaffold and jumped to floor, directly on nail which penetrated his right foot.

Building committee of Excelsior Lodge of A.F. & A.M. made recommendations in regard to replacing old lodge room, which was wrecked by cyclone on March 11, with new and modern building; no definite conclusions were reached, but resolution to turn entire matter over to building committee was adopted; committee consists of C.W. Henderson, L.A. Goodwin, A.D. Milde, A.F. Williams and W.T. Ruff.

At session of board of education of Clover Hill school district recently, Professor J.F. Wilferth of Millersville was chosen principal for that school for next school year.

Moving circle will begin here in few days; Lyman Steel has purchased Alf Green property and will occupy it as soon as Green moves to Cape Girardeau, which will be in a few days; Conductor Haggerty of Iron Mountain Railroad will them move into house vacated by Steel and owned by Sophie Schneider; Henry Wiseman will move into W.W. Blades property, vacated by Haggerty, and Frank Wilson will move to Hines property, vacated by Wiseman.
