Strange noises and funny odors might seem unusual in a classroom setting, but not when they come from the classroom of St. Mary Cathedral School's Helen Payne.

A 16-year teaching veteran, Payne teaches eighth-grade science and computer technology. She said both classes focus on experimentation, and those experiments can yield some unusual results.

"There are always complaints about the noises and odors coming from my room, but the students really get excited about our projects," said Payne. "That's what makes this job rewarding."

Payne said students find classroom demonstrations by community members a welcome break to their daily routines. Guest lecturers add an element of surprise to the curriculum and make the classes more enjoyable for students.

In addition to her work in the classroom, students also get to see Payne in the role of volleyball coach. Athletics provide a more relaxed atmosphere to develop relationships with students, she said. There's also the opportunity to bond with her husband, Mike, who volunteers as the girls basketball coach at the school.

Payne likes the supportiveness and camaraderie she has with parents and co-workers at St. Mary's. "We are a family and we are that close," she said. "Everyone is very willing to help with any problems anyone might have, whether personal or professional."
