The week of Sept. 20-26 has been designated POW-MIA Week by the American Legion Post #158 and VFW Post #104595 and its auxiliary of Jackson. A walk is scheduled to remember and pay tribute to prisoners of war and those still missing in action. Anyone wishing to participate in the walk should assemble at the American Legion Hall at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. Small American flags will be distributed to the walkers as they parade to the Brookside Park Veterans' Memorial where a short program will be held.

Speaking at the program will be Lt. Cmdr. Mark Steiner, son of Bernice and the late Gilbert Steiner. Raised on a family farm near Pocahontas, Mo., Steiner grew up with his four sisters and one brother. He ws confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church at Pocahontas and attended grade school at St. Paul Lutheran in Jackson.

Steiner graduated from Concordia Seminary in 1982 and received a graduate fellowship from the Jackson Rotary Club to Austria from 1982 to 1983. He was ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1984 and served the Beautiful Savior Parish in Memphis, Tenn., until 1988.

Steiner was commissioned as a U.S. Navy Chaplain in 1988. He took part in three deployments to the Persian Gulf, including the time during Operation Desert Storm.

He currently serves as the Command Chaplain of the First Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group in San Diego, Calif.

Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs for the program. The Avenue of Flags will also be on display that day. The walk will still be held in the event of rain.
