Southeast Missouri State University will dedicate its renovated social science building, A.S.J. Carnahan Hall, on Oct. 14.

Gov. Mel Carnahan will present the address at the building dedication ceremony. The restored building has been named after his father.

At the ceremony, Carnahan will unveil a portrait of his father and a plaque honoring him. The ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the south side of the building.

Those scheduled to participate in the ceremony include Southeast president Dr. Dale Nitzschke; Dr. Kala Stroup, Missouri commissioner of higher education and former Southeast president; Nancy Blattner, Faculty Senate chairman; history student Sherri Wildoner; political science student Shannon Hayes; Student Government President Natalie Miles; and Don Dickerson, president of the university's Board of Regents.

The ceremony will close with a ribbon cutting followed by tours of the building.

The building, constructed in 1901-1902, is the oldest structure on campus. The regents recently named it after the late Albert Sidney Johnson Carnahan, a Southeast graduate who served in Congress and as a U.S. ambassador.
