JACKSON -- Jackson school board members approved development of a remodeling schedule at the junior high school and decided several transportation issues during a meeting Tuesday night.

The junior high school tops a list of future facility improvements that need to be made within the district, said schools superintendent Dr. Howard Jones. He asked board members to authorize school architects to walk through the building and develop "broad plans to bring the building up to district standards."

The architects will make conceptual drawings detailing specific areas of concern throughout the building. The drawings will include plans to improve building safety, security and energy efficiency, as well as improve handicapped accessibility.

Board members also approved several transportation measures that were required because of a change in state law. In the past, school districts were required to send bus schedules to state offices for approval. The law now shifts approval of bus scheduling and related issues to the local level.

"We want to operate an efficient transportation system that gets our students to and from school in as safe and efficient a manner as possible," said Jones.

In other business, administrators were authorized to obtain a scale drawing of a score table officials from HealthSouth have offered the district. The gift would include the business' logo and require the district to provide advertising in sports programs. Board members will vote to accept the donation at a future school board meeting.
