Winners have been announced in the annual Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's Holiday of Lights competition.

Entries were up for the 1998 contest, said a spokesperson for the chamber's beautification committee, which selected the winners in the eighth annual contest this week.

Forty-five homes and businesses were nominated for this year's competition, with awards being given in both residential and non-residential categories.

The committee divided the city into seven sections, awarding two residential winners and one non-residential winner in each section.

Many of the winning places will be included on the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau's Holiday of Lights Bus Tour Friday and Saturday.

There were some new winners and some repeat winners this year.

Eight of the 21 total winners repeated from a year ago. These included three businesses -- Ken Oberlohr Insurance, Capaha Bank and Fountainbleau Lodge -- and five in the residential category -- Raymond and Patty Pulliam, Margie Farrar, Lawrence Russell, Bill Wilkins and Chuck Stones.

The annual competition is held in connection with the Holiday of Lights Bus Tour sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau Friday and Saturday. The tour includes the light display at Cape Girardeau County Park along with several winners of the chamber's contest and other decorated neighborhoods.
