JONESBORO, Ill. -- Shawnee National Forest dirt and grass-surfaced roads have been closed to motorized vehicles for the winter season.

The regulation is needed to prevent natural resource damage when roads are wet or soft due to rains, said forest spokesperson Becky Banker.

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are not permitted on the roads at any time. "ATVs are not licensed in Illinois," reminded Banker. "Riding them on public and forest roads is a violation of state law."

The dirt and grass roads are closed to the public each year following the second regular firearms deer season, and will remained closed through May 7, 1998.

The Forest Service posts road signs at visible locations with letter-sized notices, reminding drivers that the roads are closed.

Drivers of motorized vehicles who cause damage to roads and/or road signs, will be issued violation notices.
