People interested in helping reclaim a cemetery are invited to a cleanup of Shady Grove Cemetery Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Shady Grove, a black cemetery established in the 1800s, is near County Road 211 on the hill above the old Pecan Grove School.

To reach the cemetery, take Bloomfield Road to Highway 74. Turn right onto Highway 74 and continue 1.2 miles until you see the old white frame school on the right side of the road. Take County Road 211 past the school until it comes to a dead ends, about a half a mile. The cemetery is on the right side of the dirt road in a wooded area.

Those participating in the cleanup are urged to wear layered clothing, sturdy boots and gloves. Please bring along hand gardening tools, gasoline weed eaters and a sack lunch.

Shady Grove contains an estimated 100 graves. Families buried there include Abernathy, Bollinger, Busch, Cato, Cook, Dowdy, Holmes, Jackson, Lee, Martin, Morrison, Prim, Renfroe, Spaulding, Swan, Walker, Wilkerson, Williams, and Young.
