Chairmen of two City Council committees and acting city administrator, Carl Talley, were authorized by council Monday night to engage consultant to make long-range plan for city park land; action came following report of swimming pool advisory committee, which indicated that pool location should be decided as part of overall park development plan.

Action on recently-filed application for branch office in Marble Hill is expected in December by Jackson Savings and Loan Association; if approved, office there should open by March 1973; application, prepared over period of months with assistance of Bollinger County residents, is before State Division of Savings and Loan Supervision.

Nine candidates in Nov. 7 election have filed statements of campaign expenses with County Clerk Rusby C. Crites or County Recorder Leonard J. Schumacher; candidates have 30 days from election to file statements of their expenses; so far, 10th District Rep. Bill D. Burlison's statement is for largest amount, $3,001.95.

50 years ago, 1947

The Rev. Earl Selby of Springfield is new pastor of Calvary Baptist Church; he plans to move here immediately to be a resident in church parsonage; he is married and has one small child.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Overbeck have sold farm of 110 acres lying north of Highway 61, one mile west of Jackson, to Theodore Ochs of Cape Girardeau; on acreage stands pretentious brick house and out buildings, including large barn; Mr. and Mrs. Overbeck retained land lying south of highway and will erect new house soon; they won't give possession of their present house until new one is completed.

Mrs. Will Dugan of Colorado Springs, Colo., is in Jackson to visit Mrs. H.E. Boss and other family members; she is guest also of her sisters, Mrs. F.S. McClanahan and Blanche Spradling.

Shipments through Livestock Shippers Association this week were of good quality, according to A.E. Kies, manager; in cattle division, H.G. Cracraft had 10 steers of fair stock; Giboney Houck had consignment of eight spring calves of good weight and two cows.

New shoe factory is progressing and will be ready for business early next year; committee, having in hand collection of funds, or sale of stock, has had no trouble getting subscribers to redeem their pledges.

Mrs. Ida Hoffmeister, Mrs. J.R. Hoffman and Hulda Volkert went to Oak Ridge Thursday to home of Theodore Kiefer for "a carpet tacking"; fine dinner was served.

Theodore Busch, being only applicant, was appointed superintendent of County Farm by Cape Girardeau County Court this week; Busch will be employed under same terms and conditions, and at same salary, as last year.

Several active Red Cross workers, including assistant County Welfare Officer Henry W. Putz, met at courthouse Tuesday to discuss advisability of organizing County Welfare Board; it was found that such board could do a lot of good, and another meeting was set for Dec. 4, to which everyone is invited who has welfare of public at heart, especially Red Cross, Salvation Army, County Visitors, Civic Improvement associations, mayors and aldermen of cities, towns and villages, county judges and other county officials, church organizations such as Sundays Schools, and Ladies Aid societies; idea is to unite all efforts of those who have heretofore acted independently in helping destitute in Cape Girardeau County.
