The Area Wide United Way held a victory party Friday at the Salvation Army to celebrate surpassing its 1996 capital campaign goal of $525,000.

Members of the board of directors, campaign cabinet, and agencies served by the United Way attended.

1996 pledges and contributions of $534,022.61 exceeded expectations. It was the largest amount ever collected by the local United Way, and the most ambitious goal set by the organization.

The highest previous goal of $500,000 was from 1993 until 1995.

"Teamwork and the fact that our staff and volunteers never gave up got us here," said 1996 board chairman Pete Poe. "We all look good because we all worked hard."

United Way officers recognized Dana Corp. for increasing its employee contributions by 350 percent during the 1996 campaign. Although the business was not the largest contributor, employees quadrupled their combined donations over 1995.

"Pledges from Dana Corp. employees put us over the top," said Nancy Jernigan, United Way executive director. "This is just one example of the many companies within our communities whose giving spirit is alive and well."

Poe was recognized for his work and dedication to United Way. He was honored for 12 years of service, the last as board president.

"It takes people like Pete to make things happen," said Narvol Randol Jr., campaign chairman. "We're really grateful to have him in our community."

The unexpected capital will allow the United Way to offer several one-time grants to community agencies. Grant proposals will be accepted through March 31 to fund programs developed to meet specific needs. Grant proposals may be submitted for programs with budgets of up to $2,500.
