Free floating key chains and Star 1000 emergency phone stickers will be distributed Memorial Day weekend at the Sundowner's Marina at Lake Wappapello from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Monday.

During the distribution of the key chains and phone stickers, the Wappapello Water Rescue Patrol will remind boaters of the importance of water safety.

The patrol is in its third year at the lake and is staffed by volunteer emergency medical technicians. It is operational from dawn to dusk on weekends during the summer boating and recreation season.

Star 1000 is an air time free call for Ameritech cellular phone users to provide fast access to emergency medical attention. The Star 1000 number will be a tool for places Ameritech serves in the Poplar Bluff and Lake Wappapello areas.

The 3-watt phones are recommended for the best cellular reception.

Star 1000 is a joint project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Wappapello Lake Water Rescue Patrol, Lucy Lee Mobile Medic, Lucy Lee Healthcare and Ameritech Cellular.
