Like a familiar painting that leaves a bare spot on the wall when it is taken down, Beverly Strohmeyer's resignation last week created a void in the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri that will not be easy to fill.

Strohmeyer has been the Arts Council executive director for 12 years. She's been with the council in one capacity or another for more than 20 years. The experience she's gained over that time is what landed her a job as a program specialist with the Missouri Arts Council in St. Louis.

It's also that experience that will be so hard to replace, said Arts Council board member Chuck McGinty.

"It's a short-term big shock," McGinty said of Strohmeyer's resignation. Strohmeyer informed the board Thursday of her decision to accept the state job. Strohmeyer's last day at the council is Aug. 7.

McGinty said he's certain there are qualified replacements but finding one who will work as hard as Strohmeyer did will be difficult. "Luckily, with her position with the state, she will be readily available for guidance and advice," he said.

"Whoever fills her position will have the access of her knowledge and experience," McGinty said. "When you think of the Arts Council you think of Beverly Strohmeyer because she's been with it for years and years."

Strohmeyer said her decision to leave was not an easy one. She and her husband Donald have lived in Cape Girardeau for about 31 years. She said it will be strange to drive about 30 minutes to work every day in downtown St. Louis instead of the quiet five-minute drive to the Arts Council.

"It's a real different position for me but one that I'm pretty familiar with," Strohmeyer said.

Strohmeyer will be the state coordinator for community arts, development and touring presenting. She will also work with all the arts councils in the state on grants and developing new councils.

Not only will board members have to replace Strohmeyer, they will have to operate the Arts Council with the help of a new administrative assistant. Laura Brothers, Strohmeyer's administrative assistant for seven and a half years, left the council earlier this month.

Brothers was replaced by Daniel North on July 1. Strohmeyer said North became familiar with the council and its workings as its last intern over the spring.

North was unavailable for comment.

"With both of us leaving it will be a real challenge for the board of directors but I think they can get someone in place," Strohmeyer said.

Marge Sullivan, Arts Council board chairperson, said the board will meet later this week to discuss replacing Strohmeyer. Sullivan said the board will be advertising the position and accepting applications.

"It would be wonderful if we name somebody to be here for the transition," she said.

Sullivan said Strohmeyer has made a tremendous contribution to the culture of the area. "Her departure leaves major shoes to fill."
