POPLAR BLUFF -- Three fatal automobile accidents were reported Sunday from Missouri Highway Patrol Troop E in Poplar Bluff. POPLAR BLUFF -- Three fatal automobile accidents were reported Sunday from Missouri Highway Patrol Troop E in Poplar Bluff.

The first occurred at 10:55 a.m. in Stoddard County on Route ZZ four miles south of Dudley. Margaret E. Jackson, 57, of Campbell, a passenger in a vehicle, died when the vehicle ran off the road and overturned. Carol A. Summers, 31, also of Campbell was the driver and received moderate injuries, police said.

The highway patrol said the vehicle was northbound when it ran off the right side of the road. The driver overcorrected and lost control. The car struck an embankment and overturned.

Summers was taken to Dexter Memorial Hospital and Jackson was declared dead at the scene.

Another single-car accident claimed the life of Richard H. Cooper, 41, of Steele. The accident happened in Pemiscot County at 1:55 p.m. on Highway 61 a mile north of Holland.

Police said Cooper was driving south when his vehicle strayed off the west side of the road. The car struck an embankment, landed on its left side and caught fire. Cooper was taken to Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital in Haiti and where he was declared dead.

Police did not have information on the third fatal accident, only that it happened Sunday in New Madrid County.
