Six local girls were among 700 girls from across Missouri who recently attended Girls State.

The program, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary of Missouri, is held on the campus of William Woods University in Fulton. Each girl is chosen based on leadership, citizenship and patriotism.

Attending were Caroline Giles, Jean Marie Meyer, Alexandra Kohlfeld, Melissa Maurer, Stephanie Arnzen and Kristin McDougall.

Giles, daughter of Tom and Mary Giles, is a senior at Central High School. She is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, marching and concert bands. She was named to the A honor roll and is a member of the Student Advisory Board for the Cape Girardeau City Council. She is a member of Young Life and attends St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Meyer, daughter of Thomas M. and Mary E. Meyer, is a senior at Notre Dame High School where she has been involved with the annual musical in the cast or crew for the past three years. As a Girl Scout she earned the Silver Award and volunteered her time as a candy striper at St. Francis Medical Center. She participated in the Optimist Youth in Government Day and was asked to serve on the Youth Advisory Board to the city council. She has also won several awards for art at the SEMO District Fair.

Kohlfeld, daughter of Mike and Barbara Kohlfeld, is a senior at Notre Dame where she has been involved in the annual musical for the past three years. She belonged to the Notre Dame cross country team and is an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Maurer, daughter of Jim and Teresa Maurer, is a student at Notre Dame High School. She is involved in varsity basketball, National Honor Society and concert choir. She was also named to the A honor roll.

Arnzen, daughter of Roger and Bonnie Arnzen, is a senior at Notre Dame High School where she is involved as the school yearbook editor, a member of the school newspaper staff, National Honor Society, SADD, Scholarbowl and High School Heroes. She also participated in the annual school musical and is a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church.

McDougall, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Gerald McDougall, is a student at Central High School where she is involved in the tennis team, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Citizens in Action, speech and debate, orchestra and track.
