This week the Southeast Missourian asked, "What do you think of the Cape Girardeau Board of Education's decision to hire a truant officer?"

"I think overall it's probably a good thing. To me it's more important than just the initial cost ... The kids as a resource are more valuable than the cost of it (a truant officer's salary).

"I think it's a good idea. There is a lot of stuff going on around all the schools around here. I think it will help control the drugs and absenteeism."

"I think it's a good idea because both parents are working now and they leave the house before the kids, and it makes it kind of tempting to skip school. This would put more pressure on them to go."

"I think it would be a good idea because it would make the kids have second thoughts about skipping school, and if they had to go to court over it the parent would make sure they go to school. With a truant officer, maybe they would think twice about skipping school and running the streets and getting into trouble."
