JACKSON -- With the coming of warmer weather children will bring out those bikes they received for Christmas presents and learn how to use them. But Dixie Moore of Jackson said these children need to learn bike safety before they hit the road.

Moore said she encourages Jackson youth in grades K-4 to sign up for the Jackson Safety City program to be held on May 3. Registration for the program will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Jackson City Hall.

Children who sign up will receive a helmet, a bike fla, and a safety packet.

Moore, past co-chair of the program, said children will be taught bike safety during a one and one-half hour safety class. They will be instructed how to go around the course on their bike, how to read signs and other safety tips.

She said the program encourages helmet use. "I can not stress enough the importance of using helmets," Moore said. "A key part of the safety program will be to show the students how to properly use their helments." This year's program will focus also on rollerblade and skateboard safety.

There is a registration fee.
