Ford Motor Co. is selling its heavy-duty truck business to Freightliner Corp. as it continues to refocus on cars and light trucks.

Terms of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, were not disclosed. The companies hope to complete the sale by early 1998.

The announcement Wednesday was unexpected, but follows the pattern of Big Three automakers shedding businesses that take away from the production of cars and light trucks.
