New businesses in the United States rose by 1.4 percent last year but created almost 15 percent more jobs than a year earlier. Some 170,475 new businesses opened last year, up slightly from the 168,158 created in 1995. The U.S. Labor Department reported that jobs grew by 2.6 million in 1996.
